Fantastic Pitching Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University baseball team used some impressive pitching performances to sweep a doubleheader against Milwaukee on Saturday. The RedHawks took the first game, 2-1, in 10 innings. They then won the nightcap, 5-2. Miami is now 6-6 on the season, while the Panthers fall to 1-13.

GAME 1
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning in the opener, the RedHawks would tie the game with a solo home run from senior second baseman Will Vogelgesang. They then went to win in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 10th.

Sophomore pitcher Sam Bachman was nearly unhittable for Miami starting the ballgame and throwing eight innings, giving up one run on five hits, with one walk and 12 strikeouts. Junior Jacob Webb (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for the 'Hawks. The right-hander went two shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing one walk and striking out four.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the tenth, when with one out junior center field Cristian Tejada hit a single. Vogelgesang was hit by a pitch and senior right fielder Landon Stephens was walked to load the bases. Sophomore Cole Andrews came in as a pinch hitter and hit a shot to left field to score Tejada and give Miami the walk off win.

GAME 2
Miami took the lead in the nightcap with a three-run first and never looked back in a 5-2 victory.

Pitching was again the story as sophomore Jonathan Brand made his first career start for the RedHawks and threw four innings, giving up one run on three hits, with one walk and seven strikeouts. Junior Logan Schmitt picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Miami. The right-hander went five innings, giving up only one run on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out six.

Trailing 1-0, in the bottom of the first, the RedHawks answered with three runs. Tejada led off with a double to right center. Vogelgesang got a bunt single to move Tejada up a base, and then stole a base himself to get to second. A single up the middle by Stephens scored both Tejada and Vogelgesang to give Miami the lead. A sac fly from Andrews brought home Stephens and made it 3-1.

Keeping the Panthers off the board over the next several innings, Miami added two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior left fielder Charlie Harrigan scored on a wild pitch. Junior first baseman Michael Morissette made it 5-1 on an RBI groundout.

Milwaukee put one run in the top of the ninth on an error, but Miami still held on for the 5-2 win.

Tejada and Morissette each had two hits for the RedHawks, while Stephens had a team-high two RBIs.

Miami concludes its series with Milwaukee on Sunday. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
