BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—After a back-and-forth contest, the Miami University baseball team came up just short as it fell to UAB, 8-6, in the middle game of the series on Saturday. The RedHawks fall to 3-5 on the season, while the Blazers improve to 5-5.
Senior first baseman Charlie Harrigan's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-5 day, and included a double and a triple. Junior catcher Nate Stolze compiled a strong performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and an RBI. Junior center fielder Cristian Tejada also contributed for the RedHawks, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding two RBIs and scoring two runs.
Miami went 6-for-17 (.353) with runners in scoring position.
The RedHawks put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. A single from senior right fielder Landon Stephens drove home senior left fielder Kyle Winkler, while a single to left field by sophomore designated hitter Cole Andrews scored Tejada and gave Miami a 2-0 lead.
After the Blazers rallied to tie the ballgame at two, the RedHawks came back to retake the lead in the fourth inning. Miami scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Tejada, which brought the RedHawks lead to 5-2.
UAB scored two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take an 8-5 lead. The RedHawks got one back in the top of the seventh when Stolze hit a two-out RBI double to score Harrigan and make it 8-6. Miami was unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
The RedHawks conclude the series against UAB on Sunday at 2 p.m. (EST). Sunday's game will be played at the Blazers' on-campus Young Memorial Stadium.
