BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- The Miami University baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to UAB in the opening game of the three-game series on Friday. The RedHawks fall to 3-4 on the season, while the Blazers improve to 4-5.
Sophomore pitcher Sam Bachman started on the mound for Miami. The right-hander went five innings, giving up four runs, two earned, on seven hits, allowing no walks and striking out four. With UAB leading 5-0 after six innings, junior pitcher Michael Spinozzi came out of the pen and went two shutout innings, allowing one hit, walking none and striking out three.
Trailing 5-0, the RedHawks were able to break through in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, freshman third baseman Brian Zapp singled through the right side. A double from sophomore catcher Nate Stolze moved him to third, while an infield single by junior center fielder Cristian Tejada brought him home. Senior second baseman Will Vogelgesang put down a squeeze bunt to force home Stolze and make it 5-2. The RedHawks were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
