This year's meet is hosted by Akron on Friday and Saturday
OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami women's track and field team will cap their 2020 indoor season this weekend with the Mid-American Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday. This year's conference meet is hosted by Akron at the Stiles Field House.
The first day of events on Friday kicks off at 11:20 a.m. with the start of the pentathlon, while track events start at 3:05 with a day of prelims before the finals of the 5K and DMR in the evening. The weight throw and long jump will also be contested Friday afternoon. On Saturday, a full day of track finals begins at 1:25 p.m., with field events starting at 1:00. The last event of the meet will be the 4x400 Saturday afternoon followed by the awards ceremony at 5:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Miami got their final warm up for the conference meet last weekend at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational. Olivia Bechtel was again one of the stars for Miami; just a week after setting two school records, she beat her own mark in the 400m with a run of 53.07 that goes down as one of the best in the nation and garnered first place in the event. A multitude of other athletes had PRs on the day, including Emily Akin in the mile and Hannah Bush and Elise Walker in the high jump. For the men, Sean Torpy had a fantastic run in the 800 to win the event and climb the national leaderboard in the event to 11th.
EVENT PREVIEW: SPRINTS
Bechtel will have a chance to rack up some points for Miami in three events. She comes in as the conference leader in both the 200 and 400 after her back-to-back record-setting showings. The senior finished fifth in both events in last year's indoor meets but will look to improve upon that standing after her outstanding year saw her shatter her previous bests in each event. In addition, she will also get the chance to run the 60m dash, while Kayla Walters will run for Miami in the 60m hurdles.
EVENT PREVIEW: DISTANCE
The RedHawks have a chance to make a lot of noise in the weekend's distance events with a very deep group of entrants in each event. Emily Akin will be one of the biggest names to watch as she is one of the favorites in the 800 and the mile, while McKenna Fry could also finish well in both events. Claire Linn and Carly Davis will lead the RedHawks in the 3K and 5K respectively as top-five seeds, while Miami's distance medley team also comes in with the second-best seed time in the conference.
EVENT PREVIEW: FIELD
In the jumps, the likes of Hannah Falcione, Elise Walker, and Hannah Bush will be among those representing Miami, while Grace Dima will compete in the pole vault. In the throws, freshman Addison Hoover will lead Miami into the weight throw and Grace Rigel will throw in the shot put. Sarah Bruns is among the favorites in the pentathlon as well, for which all five events will take place Friday.
