Bruns and the DMR team take third-places; Bechtel impresses in prelims.
AKRON, Ohio - Sarah Bruns and Miami's distance medley relay grabbed six points for the RedHawks while Olivia Bechtel dominated the prelims in the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Friday.
In a day filled mostly with track prelims, Sarah Bruns was Miami's biggest points-getter as she took third in the pentathlon. After taking between 10th and 14th in the first three events, Bruns turned it on for the final two, taking third in the long jump with a leap of 5.45m. She then closed out the event with a 2:20.69 in the 800m, good for fourth in that event and third overall.
Over on the track, Olivia Bechtel had big performances in the 400 and 200 prelims. In the 400, Miami's school record holder set a new meet record with a run of 53.54, good for first across the preliminary heats. Bechtel also advanced to the finals of the 200, winning her heat and taking second overall with a time of 24.23. Sandwiched between those runs, Bechtel narrowly missed advancing in the 60 by a 0.01 seconds after finishing ninth.
Bechtel wasn't the only athlete who advanced in the day's prelims. Emily Akin ran a 2:12.67 in the 800 to take sixth in the prelims and move on to tomorrow's finals In the 60m hurdles, Kayla Walters grabbed seventh-place with a run of 8.78 and will likewise race on Saturday as well.
In one of the day's only track finals, Carly Davis picked up two points for Miami after finishing seventh in the event. The senior ran a time of 17:05.09, a PR for her in the event. Finishing just behind Davis and narrowly missing out on points themselves was Hannah Santoni and Katie Vitou.
The final event of the day was another six-pointer for the 'Hawks as the MU distance medley relay team took third. McKenna Fry, Gabby Cossio, Elena Pazman and Akin combined to run an 11:43.90 time and give the RedHawks their second top-three finals showing of the opening day.
Miami sits in eighth with 14 points after Friday's events.
Saturday will feature a full day of finals, with Bechtel and company looking to capitalize on Miami's preliminary showing. Saturday's events are slated to kick off at 1 p.m.; the meet can be streamed live on ESPN3.
