Sibande led the team with 14 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
AKRON, Ohio – Four different Miami University basketball players scored in double figures, but it was not enough in a 75-65 loss at Akron on Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks fall to 10-16 overall and 3-10 in the Mid-American Conference. The Zips are 21-6 and 11-3.
Nike Sibande led the bunch with 14 and was joined by Milos Jovic (11 points), Elijah McNamara (10 points) and Isaiah Coleman-Lands (10 points) in double figures. Dae Dae Grant had nine points and Sibande led the team with 11 rebounds.
A triple from Milos Jovic put the RedHawks up 11-10 with 12:10 to play, but that was followed by a seven minute drought for the Miami offense. Akron would reclaim its advantage at 22-11 with 5:28 remaining in the half.
Sibande, who missed last week's 65-60 victory over Northern Illinois due to illness, ended the scoring drought with a triple from the top of the key with 5:04 left to play. He would add a three-point play moments later as the RedHawk's offense started to find some rhythm, closing the gap to 26-19.
The Zips scored the first five points of the second half to push its lead to 17, but Miami responded with 10 quick points, including four from Jovic as the RedHawks trailed 41-34 at the first media timeout.
Miami's run continued as Akron's lead shrunk to 47-42 with just over 11 minutes to play following Sibande's deep triple. Akron responded with some fast-paced offense of their own and reclaimed a double digit lead, 63-52, with 7:07 to go.
Dae Dae Grant hit a triple and Sibande grabbed an offensive rebound and took it to the hole for a layup to cut Akron's lead to 64-57 with five minutes to play, but the RedHawks could get no closer.
Miami remains in Northeast Ohio as it takes on Kent State on Tuesday night. Tip time is at 7 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN+.
