The Torpy brothers, Hunter, Muresan, and Glenn have all qualified for the meet in New York.
OXFORD, Ohio - While the RedHawk women look for a conference championship this weekend, several of the Miami track and field men's athletes will compete on a bit of a different stage as four RedHawks will head to New York for the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships.
The senior-level national meet is sponsored by USA Track & Field, the national governing body for cross country and track & field. All entrants in this weekend's indoor championship must either qualify by meeting a certain mark in their event or by personally accepted into the event by USATF. Competitors include many professional athletes sponsored by running clubs around the country as well as collegiate competitors who have reached the requisite qualification benchmarks. The meet will run from Friday Feb. 22 to Saturday Feb. 24 and is hosted at Ocean Breeze Athletic Facility in Staten Island, New York.
Junior Sean Torpy will be competing in the 1000m after earning qualification with the school-record 1:48.44 run he had in the 800m last weekend at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational. He will begin his weekend campaign with the prelims of the 1000m, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday evening, where he will line up alongside the likes of Olympic bronze medalist Clayton Murphy. The finals of the event will be Sunday evening at 5 p.m.
In the same vein as his brother, Christopher Torpy also qualified on the back of a huge 800m mark, as his 1:49.60 run at Grand Valley State's Big Meet earned him a place in this weekend's 600m. Just as with the 1000m, the 600m will start with preliminaries on Saturday and the final on Sunday evening. This weekend's field is highlighted by runners such as Olympian Byron Robinson and former world champion Erik Sowinski.
Over in the sprints, junior Jeremiah Hunter will represent Miami in the 60m dash after putting up a 6.78 time at last week's Buckeye Tune-Up. Hunter will line up for the semi-finals Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and will look for a spot in the finals, which will run later on Sunday.
In the 60m hurdles, Aaron Muresan has earned himself a spot with the 8.00 he set last week at Ohio State. Muresan's competition will include national champion and 2016 Olympic finalist Devon Allen. The senior from Dublin, Ohio will look for his spot in the event finals during the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon, just prior to the 60m dash. The finals take place Sunday evening at 5:30.
In addition to the four Miamians in the track events, Kenny Glenn has qualified over in the long jump. The senior earned a place in the event with his 7.37 mark set back at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational earlier in the month. The long jump this weekend will be a single-round event, so Glenn will head straight to the finals at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
The full event schedule and list of entries are linked above.
The USA Indoor Championship will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network from 6:30-8 on Saturday and 4-6 on Sunday. This will include the first round of Torpy's 600m on Saturday as well as the finals of the 600m, 1000m, 60m, and 60m hurdles Sunday night. All events will be shown on the NBC Sports Gold platform (requires subscription).
In addition to the men in New York, the RedHawk women will be at Kent State for the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. More information on that meet can be found here.
