Miami skated away with a title thanks to a near 100 score in the free skate.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – On the final day of the Dr. Richard Porter Classic, Miami's collegiate synchronized skating team dominated the field in taking the free skate on Sunday.
The RedHawks performed their Me and My Girls themed long program to a nearly 10-point improvement from last month's Diamond Classic. Despite a one-point deduction, Miami notched 49.33 element score along with a 50.40 component score to finish off the day with a combined tally of 98.73.
"The collegiate team had a strong, energetic skate," head coach Carla DeGirolamo said. "We had good power and attack. There were a couple small mistakes, but everything else has very much improved from our first event. We'll get back to work in preparation for the Midwestern Championships in January."
The score for the RedHawks would have marked their second best from last year, trailing only their 104.68 from last season's national championship win. That 98.73 score was double digits ahead of all eight other programs competing there.
Miami's collegiate team is idle until the Midwestern Championships on Jan. 18. The senior team picks back up when it opens its international slate at the Leon Lurje Trophy on Jan. 24.
