OXFORD, Ohio – A mid-first half run opened things up for the Miami men's basketball team and it never looked back in an 80-45 win over Central State at Millett Hall on Wednesday.
Miami (3-1) outscored Central State 44-25 in the second half en route to its third-straight victory.
The RedHawks missed their first three shots as the Marauders jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Dae Dae Grant finally took the lid off the hoop by draining a baseline jumper two and a half minutes in to put MU on the board. Nike Sibande then put Miami ahead with a layup and a couple free throws before Mekhi Lairy bumped the run to 9-0 with a three-pointer.
After Central State tied it up at 9-9, Milos Jovic connected on a three-pointer to put Miami back on top with 14:09 left in the opening half. His trifecta spurred a 10-0 run as Lairy made a jumper, Dalonte Brown scored in transition and later hustled to keep a play alive that set up an Isaiah Coleman-Lands three-pointer. Brown bumped that surge to 12-0 with another transition bucket to stake the RedHawks to a 21-9 lead with 11:54 left in the first half.
The RedHawks doubled the Marauders up at 32-16 with under five minutes to go in the half and that 16-point lead held into the break with MU up 36-20. Sibande (10 points) and Brown (eight) accounted for half the scoring as the RedHawks also enjoyed a 27-14 rebounding advantage in the first 20 minutes.
An 11-3 Miami spurt coming out of the locker room bumped its lead to 47-23 with just over 16 minutes left to play. Brown then dialed long distance for his first three of the day to make it 50-23, giving him a double-double in the process.
The Red and White went up 63-30 on the back of an 11-0 run, giving them their largest lead of the afternoon. Coleman-Lands reached double figures thanks to a three and Precious Ayah got a couple bucks while Josh Brewer also got into the action. Miami's largest lead came after a Brewer steal and score that made it 72-35 with 3:45 remaining.
Eleven different players scored for the RedHawks, led by Brewer's 15 off the bench. Sibande added 14 while Brown had a double-double for 11 points and 12 rebounds. Coleman-Lands also chipped in 11 off the bench. Miami had a 52-38 rebounding edge and forced 17 Central State turnovers while committing 15 (only three in the second half). The RedHawks shot 42 percent from the floor and held the Marauders to 25.8 percent shooting.
On tap for the RedHawks is a trip to Fort Myers, Fla. for the Gulf Coast Showcase tournament. The three-day tournament begins on Monday against Drake with opening tip slated for 1:30 p.m.
