
Volleyball Rebounds to Defeat Oakland, 3-1

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University volleyball team shook off a set one loss with a strong performance the rest of the match as it defeated Oakland, 3-1 (21-25, 25-11, 25-17, 25-15) to open play at the RedHawk Invitational on Friday. The RedHawks improve to 7-4 on the season, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 3-7.
Miami had only 10 attack errors as a team during the four set encounter for a final attack percentage of .328. Senior right side hitter Stela Kukoc finished with 10 kills, while making zero attack errors to finish with a hitting percentage of .385. She also recorded 11 digs to make it a double-double.
The defense rebounded after a tough first set to hold Oakland to a .179 attack percentage for the match. Sophomore libero Abigail Huser led the way with 19 digs, while sophomore setter Morgan Seaman recorded a double-double with 25 assists and 16 digs.
The RedHawks had trouble getting into a rhythm during set one. Despite this the score remained close as the teams traded points. Tied at 12, a kill from junior right side hitter Haley Stewart, followed by a service ace from freshman setter Louise Comerford gave Miami a two-point advantage. The Golden Grizzlies would go in front, 17-16, before a kill from Kukoc tied the score. At that point, three straight Oakland points put it in control. A kill from sophomore outside hitter Sarah Wojick would help get the Red and White as close as one at 20-21, but a 4-1 run by the Golden Grizzlies finished off a 25-21 victory.
The RedHawks came out angry in set two after the setback. Four kills from freshman outside hitter Gaby Harper, along with back-to-back blocks by Stewart and junior middle hitter Margaret Payne helped Miami race to a 12-1 lead. Stewart, Wojick and freshman middle hitter Corinne Jemison put down kills as Miami built the lead to 17-5. Harper and Jemison recorded two more kills apiece as the 'Hawks cruised to a 25-11 win.
