Miami on the Road for a Pair of Games

OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University field hockey team travels to Ball State and No. 22 Ohio State this weekend. On Saturday, the RedHawks begin conference play with a noon game at Ball State. Miami then travels to Columbus, Ohio to play Ohio State on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The RedHawks lost to No. 9 Northwestern by a 4-2 margin and No. 24 Boston University 2-1 last weekend. Miami holds a 3-4 record on the season.

Assistant coach Rayell Heistand, senior midfielder/forward Paula Portugal and junior midfielder Marie-Claire Gorner spoke with MiamiRedHawks.com about last weekend's games and what to expect against Ball State and Ohio State.
 

OPPONENT PREVIEW

ABOUT BALL STATE: The Cardinals started the season 0-6 under new head coach Stephanie Bernthal. Last weekend, Ball State lost to Ohio State by a 6-0 margin and narrowly lost to Lehigh 2-1. Each of the Cardinals' goals this season have been scored by a different player.

SERIES WITH BALL STATE: Ball State holds a 44-24 all-time series lead against Miami, but the RedHawks have won the past 11 meetings. In 2017, Miami beat Ball State by a 7-1 margin in the last game of the regular season to finish undefeated in conference play for the first time in program history.

ABOUT NO. 22 OHIO STATE: The Buckeyes started the season with a 4-2 record. Last weekend, Ohio State earned its first two shutouts of the season, beating Ball State 6-0 and Lehigh 5-0. Junior midfielder Esther Clotet and senior midfielder Casey Cole lead the Buckeyes' offense. Clotet has scored four goals and three assists for 11 total points. Cole has five goals for 10 total points. The Buckeyes host Penn State on Friday.

SERIES WITH OHIO STATE: Miami has won seven of the 39 meetings with Ohio State. In 2017, the Buckeyes narrowly won by a 3-2 margin.

UP AHEAD: Miami returns home for two games next weekend. On Saturday, the RedHawks host Kent State at noon. On Sunday, the RedHawks face off against Indiana at 2 p.m.
