Miami Sweeps Wright State Doubleheader

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University softball team swept its doubleheader with Wright State on Tuesday. The RedHawks won the first game 5-2 and the second game by a 6-5 margin. Miami's record is now 19-19.
Miami 5, Wright State 2
Jaime Scher started the game for the RedHawks in the circle. Scher pitcher four full innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on four hits while striking out one batter.
Scher put Wright State down in order to get Miami to the plate without damage.
Miami jumped to an early 1-0 lead as Megan Wurts sent a solo shot over the fence to lead off the RedHawks' batters - her sixth home run of the season. Haeley Tran was hit by a pitch and Ashton Slone walked. Tran was caught stealing to end the inning.
Scher recorded another three up, three down inning in the top of the second.
Kat Lee hit a single and advanced on a wild pitch with one out in the second. Lily Wilmot singled and Mackenzie Moore walked to load the bases. Tran walked in a run with two outs to give Miami a 2-0 lead.
Wright State tied the game at two runs with a double and two singles in the third inning.
Miami responded with two runs of its own in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. Johniann Wahl led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kaitlyn Gliha hit a single that drove Wahl home. Lee followed with her second single of the day. Moore hit a single that scored Gliha. Wurts walked to load the bases but Miami would strand the loaded bases.
Courtney Vierstra came into the game to pitch to start the fifth inning. Other lineup changes included Jenny Vasquez playing second and Kara Leckinger playing third.
Miami added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Wurts reached base on error and made it to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. Wahl brought Wurts around with a single. Lizzie Bollinger also hit a single but was left on base.
Nine players reached base for Miami. Lee and Wilmot each had two hits to lead the RedHawks.
Miami 6, Wright State 5
Shannon Hohman started the game in the circle for the RedHawks in a game that would eventually see all four pitchers.
Hohman began with two strikeouts and three-straight outs in the first inning.
In the bottom of the first, Miami took a 1-0 lead on a pair of doubles from the bats of Wurts and Tran - Tran earning the RBI.
The RedHawks added a run in the second to make it a 2-0 game. Gliha led off the inning with a double before Hohman brought Gliha around with a two-out single.
Miami scored one more run in the third to lead 3-0. Gliha walked and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Rylee Whispel. Morgan Lott singled. Hohman hit a sacrifice fly to score Gliha.
Taylor Rathe replaced Hohman as the RedHawks' pitcher to start the fifth inning. Wright State scored two in the fifth on a couple singles among fielder's choice plays.
Slone and Wahl each singled in the fifth but could not score.
Hohman re-entered the game as Miami's pitcher to start the sixth inning. Wright State took a 5-3 lead on a hit-by pitch, pair of singles and a walk. With two outs, Scher replaced Hohman in the circle. Scher saw one batter and one out to end the inning.
Whispel walked, Lott reached base on error and Tran was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the RedHawks in the sixth inning, but Miami could not do any damage.
Vierstra started the seventh inning in the circle. She forced Wright State to take quick outs, including one strikeout.
Miami was trailing 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh. Wright State changed its pitcher after Wahl walked to lead off the inning. Lee was hit by a pitch but out on a fielder's choice that saw Gliha to first base. Whispel walked to load the bases with one out. Lott hit a single that scored both Wahl and Gliha to tie the game at five. Vierstra singled in her first collegiate at-bat to load the bases again. Wurts hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field that scored Whispel to win the game.
Ten RedHawks reached base - eight of those having at least one hit. Lott led Miami with two hits (both singles) and two RBI's. Hohman also registered two RBI's. Wahl and Whispel each walked twice.
UP AHEAD
The RedHawks close out their 2017 home schedule with a three-game series against Ohio on Friday and Saturday. Miami will play one game on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
