OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University baseball team silenced Northern Kentucky's bats Friday at McKie Field, starting the three-game series with a 2-0 win. The win extends the RedHawks' win streak to seven in a row, making their record 9-3 on the season.
Sophomore Spencer Mraz turned in a great start to anchor the RedHawk pitching staff, tossing five innings of scoreless ball. The sophomore struck out five while only allowing one hit to improve his record to 2-0. Gus Graham and Michael Hendricks combined for three innings clean innings of relief, and junior Andy Almquist came in in the ninth for his third save of the season.
The Miami offense was limited to four hits by the Norse pitchers, but found ways to push a few runs across. In the third frame, Will Vogelgesang was hit by a pitch and then stole second, moving to third on a throwing error by the NKU catcher. After a Ross Haffey walk, sophomore Landon Stephens got Vogelgesang home on another Norse error. The RedHawks would threaten the rest of the inning but were unable to add more runs.
The other Miami tally came in the seventh, again on an RBI from Stephens. Carlos Texidor singled and made his way to third after a walk and a sacrifice bunt. Stephens brought Texidor home, this time on a long sacrifice fly to left field. This would prove to be all the offense the RedHawks needed, as the bullpen shut down the Norse to seal the win.
The series against Northern Kentucky will continue tomorrow at McKie Field, with first pitch at 1 p.m.
