
RedHawks Pick Up Two Wins on Sunday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Miami University softball team won both games on Sunday at the Red & Black Classic. The RedHawks beat Maryland 2-1 and IUPUI 6-3, bringing Miami's record on the weekend to 3-1.
Miami 2, Maryland 1
Courtney Vierstra pitched another complete game for the RedHawks, only allowing five hits and striking out seven batters. The run scored was unearned.
The game was scoreless through three innings, with Miami breaking the tie in the bottom of the fourth. Kaitlyn Gliha singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Morgan Lott. Gliha advanced to third on a single from Mackenzie Moore. Gliha and Moore pulled off a double steal to put a run on the board. Megan Wurts hit a single to drive Moore home.
Maryland led off the sixth inning with a double, advancing to third on a Miami fielding error. A single drove a run in, unearned by Vierstra. With the tying run on base and one out, Vierstra delivered a strikeout and Moore made an infield play to end the inning. Vierstra and the infield put together a three up, three down inning in the seventh to seal the victory for the RedHawks.
Wurts went 2-for-4, tallying the RedHawks' lone RBI. Haeley Tran, Gliha and Moore also had a hit. Taylor Rathe, Morgan Lott, Wurts, Gliha and Moore all had a stolen base.
Miami 6, IUPUI 3
Shannon Hohman, Rathe and Vierstra all pitched against IUPUI, striking out a combined eight batters while allowing seven hits. Hohman pitched the first four innings with Rathe coming into the game as relief at the start of the fifth and Vierstra coming in as relief for the final inning.
Miami scored all six of its runs in the second inning. Kat Lee singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Gliha's bat. Lizzie Bollinger reached base on a fielding error and advanced to second with Lee getting the RedHawks on the board. Lott got onto base with a fielder's choice. Moore doubled, scoring Bollinger and Lott. Tran doubled and drove in runs from Moore and Wurts. Tran scored the final Miami run on a fielding error that got Ashton Slone on base.
In the sixth, IUPUI loaded the bases with two singles and a hit-by-pitch. Another single drove in two runs to cut the RedHawks lead to 6-2.
IUPUI loaded the bases again in the seventh inning, this time on two singles and a walk. A fielder's choice allowed IUPUI's third run to score.
Lee led the batters, going 2-for-3. Tran, Gliha and Moore each registered a hit. Moore had three stolen bases while Lott had two.
UP AHEAD
The RedHawks travel to Maryland for a tournament next weekend. Miami's first game is against Utah on Thursday at 2 p.m.
