Miami takes on Guelph on Sunday at 4 p.m.
OXFORD, Ohio – After a prolonged break from competition, the No. 16 Miami hockey team returns to the ice on Sunday for an exhibition to move it into the second half of the season.
The RedHawks play host to Guelph in their first competition in 29 days since their Dec. 1 tie against No. 1 St. Cloud State. Opening faceoff is at 4 p.m.
Miami went 9-6-3 in the first half of the season and its 3-3-2-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference record has it tied with Denver for fourth place (12 points) in league play.
Miami's defensive play was a catalyst to the team's best first-half record since 2014-15 as it allows just 2.17 goals per game (ninth in the country). Junior goaltender Ryan Larkin has also been an anchor in goal with a bounce back campaign thus far with his 1.89 goals against average ranking 10th among NCAA goaltenders while his .936 save percentage is the fourth best in the nation.
Offensively, senior forward Josh Melnick (6-11-17) is one of four RedHawks with double digit points, joining junior forward Gordie Green (6-9-15), freshman defenseman Derek Daschke (3-9-12) and senior defenseman Grant Hutton (4-6-10) while junior forward Karch Bachman paces the offense with seven goals. MU's scoring has been more by committee as 10 different skaters scored at least three goals in the season's first half.
Guelph enters the exhibition contest with a 6-10 record. Sunday marks its fourth exhibition against an NCAA foe this season as it has dropped decisions to Clarkson (4-3), Colgate (5-2) and Cornell (7-0) back in October.
Sunday's contest will be streamed live on NCHC.tv with live stats provided on MiamiRedHawks.com. Additionally, there will be live audio of the tilt on the Miami IMG Sports Network.
