Golf
Last Week: Miami finished ninth at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate with a team score of 67-over par. Junior Patrick Flavin was the RedHawks top individual finisher at 13-over par. He finished in a tie for 22nd. (Saturday Recap) (Sunday Recap) This Week: The Mid-American Conference Tournament takes places this weekend at the Virtues Golf Course in Nashport, Ohio. The 72-hole event will feature 36 holes on Friday, followed by single rounds of 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday. The winner of the MAC Championship receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Baseball
Last Week: The RedHawks (16-25, 3-9 MAC) began this past week on a high note as they captured the program's first-ever Joe Nuxhall Classic title. In the first round on Tuesday against Wright State, the RedHawks got a go-ahead three-run blast from Dallas Hall to take a 4-1 lead and they held on late to top the Raiders, 4-3 (RECAP). Wednesday's championship game against Xavier saw the two teams tied at 5-all through five innings of action but Miami used a five-run top of the sixth to pull away and defeat the Musketeers, 12-6 (RECAP). After a successful two games in midweek action, the RedHawks took a seven-game winning streak on the road to Ohio. Friday's series opener was a back-and-forth battle that saw the Red & White come back to tie the game on three different occasions but it was the Bobcats who came out on top, 9-5 (RECAP). Miami bounced back to win a close one on Saturday by a 3-1 score. The RedHawks used a three-run third inning while the pitching of Zach Spears and Nick Ernst picked up the difference as the MU was able to even the series (RECAP). Sunday's series finale was a tough one for the Red & White as they outhit Ohio, 8-5, but a couple costly errors gave the Bobcats a 3-2 win (RECAP). This Week: Miami begins its week by hosting Morehead State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before heading back out on the road as the team heads to Bowling Green for a three-game weekend series.
Softball
Last Week: Miami (26-17 overall, 12-6 MAC) moved into sole possession of the MAC East with a home sweep of Buffalo, finishing the weekend with six victories in its last seven outings. In the first game of Friday's doubleheader, the RedHawks loaded the bases to begin the first, but were only able to bring home one run. After Buffalo took a 2-1 lead in the second, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman tied the game with a two-run home run to right-center. Later in the frame, sophomore first baseman Johniann Wahl put them ahead with a RBI single, followed by a two-run double from senior catcher Lauren Anderson that clinched a 6-3 victory. Seniors Carly Mortensen and Kelsey Fredericks held the Bulls' offense in check with 4.2 innings of no-hit relief work. The second matchup with UB was a pitcher's duel led by the combined five-hitter from freshman starter Jaime Scher and Fredericks. Following a thwarted Buffalo charge in the top of the fourth, junior third baseman Kat Lee knocked in the game's lone run with a RBI single in the bottom half. Fredericks picked up saves in each game to tie the national lead with six. (RECAP) In Saturday's series finale, UB struck first with a two-out, two-run homer to left in the top of the first, but Miami responded with Schlattman's RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom half. In the bottom of the fourth, she led off with a double, eventually scoring on a RBI double from Lee to tie the game. The Red and White would take the lead with a two-run single up the middle from junior right fielder Megan Wurts. The Bulls responded in the next inning, taking the lead with a RBI double and sac fly. Miami responded with a Lee RBI single, followed by senior center fielder Jenna Jones' three-run homer to left that sealed an 8-5 win. (RECAP) This Week: The RedHawks return to the road this week for a pair of in-state trips. On Tuesday, Miami travels the short distance to face Wright State University in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Following that, the Red and White have a critical three-game set at Ohio University with action beginning on Friday at 5 p.m.
Tennis
Last Week: Miami took on the Eastern Michigan Eagles in its final match of the regular season on Sunday Afternoon. The 'Hawks started the match of strong by taking the doubles point thanks to Nelli Ponomareva and Anzhelika Shapovalova. The Red & White went on to claim a victory 4-3 after tallying wins at second, fourth and fifth position, respectively. Shapovalova outlasted Andrea Martinovska at second flight, (7-5, 6-1). Emily Struble won at fourth position with a straight-set win over Anna Veleva, (6-1, 6-4). Hannah Shteyn recorded the winning point for Miami, coming out on top in her match against Alejandra Barcelo (6-3, 6-3) (RECAP). This Week: Miami returns home to prepare to travel to Ball State to compete in the Mid-American Conference Championships this weekend. The three-day event opens up on Friday with a match against Northern Illinois at 10 a.m.
