OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against East Tennessee State on Sunday at McKie Field. A tight first contest saw the Buccaneers slide past the Red & White, 2-1, while game two featured an offensive eruption for ETSU that led the Buccaneers to a 14-0 victory and a series win over the 'Hawks.
Game 1 - ETSU 2, Miami 1
ETSU collected the game's first run in the opening inning of action, scoring on a passed ball with two out.
The Bucs (11-7) stretched their lead to two runs in the top of the fifth when a fielder's choice allowed a runner from third to make it home.
Miami (4-13) finally broke through in the bottom half of the eighth. Carlos Texidor led off the inning by reaching on error and was subsequently moved over to second on a groundout. Following a strikeout, Ross Haffey pulled a base hit through the left side, sending Texidor around third and in to score.
The Red & White held their ground in the top of the ninth to keep the score at 2-1. In the home half of the inning, Miami got a two-out base hit from Steve Sada to put the winning run at the plate. However, a groundout the next at-bat gave ETSU the narrow victory.
Miami starting pitcher Zach Spears (L, 1-4) was solid in five innings of work, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Nick Ernst tossed the final four innings in relief and surrendered no runs and just two hits. ETSU's starting pitcher exited with an injury just two-thirds of an inning in, which brought on Drew Korzybski (W, 2-2) in relief. Korzybski's outing spanned 6.1 innings and he allowed no runs and four hits.
Game 2 - ETSU 14, Miami 0
The Bucs set the tone early with four runs in the third inning and six in the next. ETSU tacked on a single run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one final tally in the eighth.
RedHawk starting pitcher Brad Schwartz (L, 1-2) went 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits. The Bucs' Blake Smith (W, 1-2) went the distance to post the complete-game shutout.
Miami continues its homestand by hosting Northern Kentucky on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The team then opens Mid-American Conference play at home as Western Michigan comes to town for a three-game weekend series that is set to begin on Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
