RedHawks Double Up Raiders 14-7 After Nine-Run Eighth

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Miami was unable to put a runner on base in the top of the first inning. Jack Geiser and Marcus Dierks recorded three straight flyouts to center field to hold the Raiders scoreless in the bottom of the first.
- Miami's first baserunner came aboard in the second as Carson Raether singled up the middle to take first base, but the RedHawks were unable to bring anyone around. After the Raiders came up with a leadoff single in the bottom of the inning, Raether and Ignacio Gonzalez caught the runner stealing second to record the first out. Wright State put two more batters on base and scored on a sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead.
- Cruz came up with a leadoff triple in the third, forcing a pitching change for the Raiders. Cruz made the quick trip back to home plate as Ryan Novak hit a home run past the right-field scoreboard to give Miami a 2-1 lead. With two outs, Tommy Harrison beat the throw to record an infield single. Mason Breidenbach and Gonzalez each proceeded to walk, loading the bases, but a flyout stranded all three runners. Wright State then put two runners on, but the RedHawk defense got out of the inning unscathed with the help of another Raider that was caught stealing by Raether and Gonzalez.
- Evan Appelwick walked with no outs in the fourth and Cruz placed a successful bunt single in front of home plate to put Appelwick in scoring position. Christopher Roa loaded the bases with another walk, setting up Harrison for a two-run single up the middle that stretched Miami's lead to three runs, 4-1. Wright State put one runner on in the bottom of the frame, but three straight outs pitched by Geiser held the three-run lead heading into the fifth inning.
- Breidenbach singled in the top of the fifth before being cut down by a double play. A groundout rendered the RedHawks scoreless. Geiser used a groundout and two strikeouts to fend off the Raiders going into the sixth inning.
- Appelwick led off the sixth with a no-doubt home run to deep left field, his 12th of the year, bringing the score to 5-1. The Raiders answered with a home run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to pull back within three runs, 5-2. The Raiders continued to rally, putting two runners on with a walk and a Miami error and scoring another run with an RBI single. A bases-clearing double tied the game at 5-5. A wild pitch and a walk then put runners at the corners, but Miami recorded an out to escape the jam.
- Harrison hit a single off the right field wall in the seventh, but Miami could not bring him home. Carson Byers came in to pitch for Miami in the bottom of the frame with one on base and threw a fielder's choice and two swinging strikeouts to end the inning.
- Miami posted a nine-run rally in the eighth, a feat that started with a single to left field by Appelwick. Cruz immediately followed with a single to right, moving Appelwick to second, and Novak took an HBP to juice the bags with one out. Dierks broke the tie with a fielder's choice that put runners at the corners and made the score 6-5. Jamie Rasmussen came in to pinch hit and doubled to the right-field corner on an 0-1 count, bringing Cruz and Dierks home to make it 8-5.
- With two outs, Harrison and Breidenbach reached on an intentional walk and a walk, respectively, loading the bases again. Gonzalez, Raether and Appelwick took back-to-back-to-back walks to push Rasmussen, Harrison and Breidenbach home and extend the lead to 11-5. Cruz placed a three-RBI double perfectly into the right-field corner to clear the bases and round out the nine-run, 14-batter inning that made it a 14-5 advantage for Miami.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Wright State began the inning with two consecutive homers to pull back within seven runs at 14-7. Byers recorded a groundout and two strikeouts to hold a seven-run lead into the ninth.
- A walk and an HBP brought Harrison and Breidenbach to the base paths in the top of the ninth, but no runs scored. Byers pitched a one-two-three inning to put a lid on the 14-7 victory.
