LEXINGTON, Ky. - Ahead just 3-2 through five and a half innings, Kentucky used 13 total runs between the sixth and seventh frames to pull away and down Miami, 16-3, on Friday evening at Cliff Hagan Stadium. With the defeat, the RedHawks drop to 3-9 on the season while the Wildcats move to 10-6.
Kentucky cracked the scoreboard first with a three-run bottom of the fourth. An error with a runner on third and a two-run shot to left center gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead through four.
Miami battled back to cut into the deficit with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the top of the fifth, a leadoff solo shot to left field by Hayden Senger made it 3-1. Then, the Red & White got two quick baserunners to begin the sixth as Ross Haffey reached on an error and Adam Yacek doubled down the left field line. After a strikeout, Brooks Urich grounded out to second but Haffey came in to score on the play from third, narrowing the UK margin to 3-2.
The Wildcats erupted for seven runs in the home half of the sixth on three one-run singles, a two-run single, a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. In the seventh, they would tack on six more to widen their lead to 16-2 heading into the eighth.
Miami would get one more run, in the top of the ninth, as a J.T. Stone groundout scored Steve Sada from third. RedHawk starter Zach Spears took the loss and fell to 1-3 on the season. Picking up the victory for Kentucky was its starter, Zach Logue, who improved to 3-1.
With the schedule change that was made earlier in the week, the two teams will be off Saturday before closing the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. The contest will air live on SEC Network+ and ESPN3.
