CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃÆ'¢'¬" On the final day of competition at the Carolina Classic, Miami University's softball team fell 8-0 to Towson Sunday morning at Anderson Stadium.
The Tigers (6-7) quickly got on the board in the first with an RBI single to right that scored the runner from second. In the bottom half of the inning, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman singled up the middle, but the RedHawks (5-8) were unable to move her over.
Towson threatened again in the top of the second by placing two runners in scoring position with one out, but Miami was able to throw the lead runner out at home on a fielder's choice to Schlattman. However, a fielding error on the next batter allowed Towson runners to score from second and third, extending the lead to 3-0.
After a scoreless half for Miami, Towson led off the third with a double, leading to a two-run home run to center that broadened the advantage to 5-0. After a hit-by-pitch and walk, freshman Jaime Scher relieved Fredericks and got out of the inning with a strike out.
In the bottom of the third, Wurts singled, but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice. Although freshman second baseman Hannah Obrey would reach second on a throwing error, a ground out ended the frame and kept the score at 5-0.
The Tigers led off the fourth with a single, with the runner eventually advancing to third on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt. The lead runner was then thrown out at home on a sacrifice bunt attempt, avoiding any further damage for Miami.
The RedHawks opened their half of the fourth strongly as sophomore first baseman Johniann Wahl and senior designated player Lauren Anderson both reached with no outs and were replaced by pinch runners. Junior catcher Rylee Whispel's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, but a pair of outs ended the inning without scoring.
Towson extended its lead with back-to-back home runs in the top of the fifth, leading to sophomore Shannon Hohman relieving Scher. Inheriting a runner on first, Hohman allowed an RBI single to center that put the score at 8-0.
Needing a run to avoid the game ending, the RedHawks were unable to rally and the game concluded with a double play.
The RedHawks will remain on the road for the San Diego Classic next weekend at San Diego State University. Miami will face Oregon State, BYU, San Jose State, Boston University and the host institution in the event.
