TAMPA, Fla. - A walk-off single in game two of a doubleheader gave South Florida a Saturday sweep over the Miami University Baseball team. With the loss, the RedHawks fall to 0-6 on the season while the red-hot Bulls move to 6-1.
Game One - USF 7, Miami 2
South Florida jumped on the Red & White early with two-run innings in the third and fourth frames. Miami got on the board in the away half of the seventh when a bases-loaded balk cut the deficit to 4-1.
In the bottom of the eighth, a bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly and an RBI single pushed the Bulls' lead to 7-1 heading into the ninth. The Red & White mustered one run in their final chance at the plate, a Brooks Urich fielder's choice that scored Ross Haffey, but that was as narrow as the gap would get as USF grabbed the 7-2 victory.
Miami starting pitcher Zach Spears took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work. In 3.2 frames in relief, Gus Graham surrendered two runs on six hits while Eric Handelman allowed one run on one hit in one inning of action.
Game Two - USF 3, Miami 2
The RedHawks kicked off the scoring for the first time this season when they plated two runs in the top of the seventh. With two out and one on, Brooks Urich singled to right, allowing Cal Elvers to come around and score from second. Elvers had reached on a double down the left field line. Spencer Dull capped off the inning with a triple to the gap in right that brought in Urich, giving MU a 2-0 advantage through six and a half innings of play.
Red & White starting pitcher Brad Schwartz was one strike away from a complete-game shutout but a USF two-run blast to right knotted things up at two apiece, ending Schwartz's day after an otherwise dominant performance. He finished with 8.2 innings of work, allowing just four hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters. He ended up with a no decision. On in relief was Spencer Mraz, who allowed back-to-back base hits, the latter of which gave the Bulls the walk-off win.
The two teams close out the series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
