TAMPA, Fla. - The early offensive struggles continued as the RedHawk baseball team dropped an 11-2 decision to South Florida on Sunday.
Miami (0-7) got on the scoresheet in its first opportunity at the plate when Adam Yacek, who had reached earlier in the inning on a leadoff single, ran home from third on a passed ball to give the 'Hawks a 1-0 edge. The margin was short-lived though as USF (7-1) posted single-run innings in the first, second and third frames.
In the fourth, three-straight base hits for the Bulls netted them four more runs, giving them a 7-1 advantage through four.
A bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly and a one-run double extended the USF lead to 10-1 in the bottom of the seventh before a solo shot in the home half of the eighth pushed across one more for the Bulls.
Facing an 11-1 deficit entering the ninth, Miami was able to make a little bit of noise as a Yacek single up the middle brought home J.T. Stone, who had gotten on via a leadoff single, the first hit of his young career. The RedHawks got no closer though as the Bulls finished without further incident to pick up the weekend sweep over the Red & White.
Miami gets back on the field this coming weekend when they host Illinois State for the team's first home series of the season. The home opener will be Friday at 6 p.m.
