A tight, defensive battle in the first half, the University at Buffalo used an early second half run to pull away for a 71-58 victory over Miami on Saturday (RECAP). This Week: The final two home games of the season take place for Miami this week. The RedHawks host Ohio for the Battle of the Bricks on Tuesday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Miami welcomes Bowling Green to Millett Hall for a 3:30 p.m. game. That will be Senior Day/Fan Appreciation Day. Senior Jake Bischoff will be honored in a pregame ceremony, while there will be giveaways to thank the fans.
Golf
Last Week: The Miami University golf team placed third at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play tournament following 5-1 victory over third-seed Ball State on Tuesday. The RedHawks advanced to the third-place match after defeating top-seed Eastern Michigan in the first round and falling to Seton Hall in an all square tiebreaker in the second round on Monday (Monday Recap) (Tuesday Recap). This Week: The RedHawks are idle. They return to action March 6-7 for the Colleton River Collegiate in Bluffton, S.C.
Hockey
Last Week: The RedHawks (9-15-6, 5-11-4-2 NCHC) returned home to face NCHC leading and second-ranked Denver over the weekend. A pair of DU power play goals in the second period dug MU into a 2-0 hole after two periods on Friday, but Zach LaValle and Jared Brandt netted their first goals of the season to tie things up midway through the third. However, Denver had the final surge by scoring three times in a 2:58 span late to seal away a 5-2 win (RECAP). Carson Meyer scored 4:08 into Saturday's finale to put Miami on top, but Denver scored a power play goal and added another tally in the first to go ahead 2-1. While a power play goal by Grant Hutton evened things up in the second, Miami still trailed 3-2 after 40 minutes. From there, the Pioneers killed an early RedHawk power play in the third and scored two more times to post yet another 5-2 victory (RECAP). This Week: Miami heads to top-ranked Minnesota Duluth for a Thursday-Friday series.
Softball
Last Week: Miami remained on the road as it traveled to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Holiday Inn Hilltopper Classic at Western Kentucky University. On Saturday, the RedHawks (5-4) opened up action with a comeback victory against Western Illinois. In the bottom of the sixth inning, sophomore shortstop Michaela Schlattman hit a two-run go-ahead home run, her second of the game, to seal a fourth-consecutive victory. In the nightcap against hosting WKU, Schlattman hit her third homer of the day and helped the RedHawks build a 6-2 lead in the fifth inning, but a seventh-inning rally by the Hilltoppers gave them a 7-6 win (RECAP). Sunday's action began with another heartbreaker as Belmont broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 4-2 win. In the defeat, senior catcher Lauren Anderson went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the fifth. Miami avenged the previous day's defeat with a 3-1 victory over WKU in the final game of the tournament. Freshman starter Jaime Scher picked up her first career victory with a complete game outing (RECAP). This Week: Miami remains on the road next weekend for the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The RedHawks will face off against Marshall, Hampton, Towson and hosting North Carolina.
Women's Tennis
Last week: Miami had another busy weekend after they faced off with Eastern Kentucky University on Friday and Xavier University on Sunday. The RedHawks fell to EKU, 4-3, despite a strong showing from all players. Juniors Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina topped Laura Argente and Raquel Montalvo, (6-3) at No. 1. Sophomore Anzhelika Shapovalova defeated her EKU opponent in straight sets (6-1, 7-5), to put Miami on the board. Sophomore Emily Struble tied up the competition with her win over Kristina Lagoda in straight sets (6-3, 7-5). Ponomareva put the RedHawks in her lead with her win at No. 1 (6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3). It all came down to Vasiukhina, but unfortunately Miami was unable to clinch the match, as she fell after a heartbreaking tiebreaker (6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2)) (RECAP). The 'Hawks returned on Sunday to fall to the Musketeers (4-3). Xavier swept the doubles competition with losses on all flights for Miami. Ponomareva once again claimed a win at No. 1 over her opponent in straight sets (6-2, 6-2). Shapovalova downed her opponent in a hard-earned win (7-5, 7-6 (7-5)) (RECAP). This Week: The RedHawks have this week to prepare for a doubleheader coming up on Sunday, Feb. 26, where they will take on Northern Kentucky at 10 a.m. and then again with Ohio Northern at 6 p.m. Both matches will take place at Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton Ohio.
Track and Field
Last Week: The Miami track and field team split up this weekend, sending part of the men's team to Notre Dame while the rest of the men and women traveled to Findlay. The 'Hawks dominated in Findlay as nine athletes took first place in their respective events. Juniors Emily Hooker (57.06 in the 400m) and Lauren Hoover (2:18.21 in the 800m) had strong showings for the mid-distance group. Four RedHawks won their long-distance races, while Katie Walter (shot put) and Grace Dima (pole vault) won in their field events. In South Bend, Andrew Dusing's 4:02.90 in the one mile landed him second in the Mid-American Conference for the event this season and just a second short of the all-time Miami record. Freshman Chris Torpy did break a school record with his 1:52.35 in the 800m (Friday RECAP) (Saturday RECAP). This Week: The RedHawk women's team is off to the MAC Indoor Championships from February 24-25.
Baseball
Last Week: The RedHawks (0-3) opened the season against a tough opponent in Arkansas this past weekend. On Friday, a six-run first inning for the Razorbacks helped lead them past Miami, 7-0 (RECAP). Saturday's contest was a bit tighter but a three-run third inning for Arkansas gave it all it needed to slide past the RedHawks, 5-1. MU's lone run came on a solo blast by Ross Haffey (RECAP). The series finale on Sunday saw the Arkansas offense come alive late while Miami's struggles at the plate continued. When all was said and done, the Razorbacks had captured an 11-1 win. Freshman Cal Elvers was the bright spot of the day for the Red & White as he went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI (RECAP). This Week: Miami heads to Tampa, Fla., to take on USF for four games, beginning on Friday at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Bulls and RedHawks will play a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. before closing the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: Miami (9-18, 3-11 MAC) lost a couple of heartbreakers this past week to Northern Illinois and Bowling Green. On Wednesday against the Huskies, the RedHawks were able to keep a normally high-scoring team at bay as the teams battled to the very end. The game came down to one final shot but MU could not convert in the closing seconds as NIU held on for a 63-61 win (RECAP). Saturday against the Falcons ended exactly the same way. The 'Hawks had an open look as the seconds expired but the attempt rimmed out as Miami fell to BG, 61-59 (RECAP). This Week: The RedHawks hit the road for matchups at Akron and Ohio this Wednesday and Saturday, respectively. Both games are slated to be carried live on ESPN3.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: Idle. This Week: All three teams head to their biggest competition of the season to this point, the U.S. National Championships in Rockford, Ill. The senior and junior teams begin their run on Friday when they both perform their short and long programs. The collegiate team closes things out on Saturday with their long program.
