FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Miami University baseball team opened its 2017 season by dropping a 7-0 decision at Arkansas on Friday.
Miami got off to a tough start as Arkansas plated six runs in the home half of the first. Starting pitcher Cole Gnetz was pulled in favor of Brad Schwartz after two-thirds of an inning pitched. With the bases loaded, Schwartz was able to get a flyout to curtail any further damage. He would retire the first nine batters he faced before an error broke the streak. At the conclusion of his outing, which lasted 5.0 innings, he had racked up five strikeouts while allowing just one hit.
Miami nearly broke through in the top of the fourth. Ross Haffey kicked off the frame with a single, the Red & White's first leadoff baserunner of the day. After two quick outs, Landon Stepens ripped his first career collegiate hit into right field to put Haffey in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Arkansas added to its advantage in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff solo shot to right center. Through seven innings of play, the Razorbacks were maintaining a 7-0 lead.
The RedHawks got a pinch-hit leadoff single in the top of the ninth from Cal Elvers, his first collegiate base knock. However, MU could not convert as Arkansas was able to close the game and keep the `Hawks off the scoreboard.
The same two teams get back on the diamond at 1 p.m. ET tomorrow for game two of the three game set.
