OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team beat Longwood 2-1 to stay undefeated in the MAC this season. The RedHawks improve to 6-6 on the season and the Lancers fall to 10-3.

I think they played with heart," said head coach Inako Puzo. "We have great basic skills and great fitness, but I think at the beginning of the season we were missing the heart and that passion and that fight you have to come to the games with. I think that lately we have been doing a better job, against Kent State and now against Longwood."

Miami led the game in shots 14-10. Both teams received five penalty corners.

In the 33rd minute of play, Lexie Nugent tipped in her fifth goal of the season on a shot from the left side of the net from Allie Grace Joyner.

In the second half of play, Lilly Achterwinter scored her fourth goal of the season to tie the game at one. Leonie Verstraete passed the ball across the circle to set Achterwinter up to score.

With less than five minutes to play in the game, Nugent netted her second goal of the afternoon and sixth goal of the season. On a penalty corner chance, Paula Portugal took a shot on goal and Nugent was in front of the goalkeeper to pick up the rebound.

Being able to sing the fight song at home is really satisfying," said junior midfielder Estel Roig. "We still have some MAC games and we have to focus on those because that was a great win and it was hard but the season is not over."

We have been talking in the last couple weeks, after Kent and before Kent, about thinking about the little things and how we stay motivated, about the attitude and to play with heart," said senior midfielder/forward Henni Otten. "I think that was noticeable after [the game was] tied."

Maddie Passarella recorded four saves, all in the second half of play. Portugal led the RedHawks with five shots.

Miami travels to North Carolina for a pair of games next weekend. The RedHawks face off against No. 2 Duke on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. and Davidson on Monday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m.
