Miami Takes Down Buffalo, 3-1

OXFORD, Ohio -- A solid all-around effort led the Miami University volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-23) win over Buffalo Thursday evening. The RedHawks improve to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls fall to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in the MAC.

Miami got the majority of its offense from the antennas in this match. Senior outside hitter Olivia Rusek and sophomore outside hitter Taylor Daignault each recorded double-doubles for the RedHawks. Rusek had a team-leading 15 kills and 10 digs. Daignault finished with 14 kills and 16 digs. She had only four attack errors in 31 attempts for a .323 attack percentage.

A pair of kills from senior middle hitter Meredith Stutz and a block by Stutz and freshman setter Morgan Seaman helped Miami to a 7-4 lead to begin set one. Buffalo scored next, but a 4-1 run by the `Hawks made it 11-6 and forced the Bulls to call timeout. Out of the break, UB went on a 9-4 run that tied the score at 15. A kill and a block from sophomore middle hitter Margaret Payne got the Miami offense going again, but Buffalo was able to once again tie the score at 20. A kill and service ace from Daignault, followed by a kill from Rusek made it 23-20 in favor of the Red and White. The Bulls scored the next two, but a kill from Stutz and a Buffalo attack error gave Miami a 25-22 win.

Tied at seven in set two, a kill from Rusek and a service ace by Daignault sparked an 8-3 run that put Miami in control at 15-10. A kill from senior right side hitter Katie Tomasic put the exclamation point on that run. The Bulls cut the deficit to three at 16-13, but another kill from Tomasic stopped their momentum. Leading 22-19, a kill from Tomasic, a block by Tomasic and Payne and a kill from Payne gave the RedHawks set point. UB scored next, but a kill from Tomasic off an assist from Seaman finished off a 25-20 victory.

Set three was all Miami early on as Rusek, Tomasic and senior libero Maeve McDonald each had service aces. A block from Seaman and Stutz made it 10-5 and forced a Buffalo timeout. The Bulls took advantage of the break, going on a 10-4 run of their own to take the lead at 15-14. Trailing 16-17, the RedHawks seemingly took control with a 6-1 run finished off by back-to-back kill from Rusek that gave them a 22-18 advantage. UB did not give up as it scored the next six in a row to create set point at 24-22. A block from Payne and Seaman fought it off once, but the Bulls responded with a kill to steal a 25-23 win.

Trailing 6-8 in set four, a kill from Payne and a block by Rusek tied the score. The teams traded the lead several times until it was tied at 14. At that point a 4-1 run by Buffalo gave it an 18-15 advantage and forced the RedHawks to call timeout. Out of the break, two kills from Rusek along with kills from Daignault and Payne were part of a 5-1 run that put Miami back on top, 20-19. The Bulls scored two in a row to take the advantage right back at 21-20. The teams traded side outs until a kill from Rusek tied it at 22. At that point Daignault and Tomasic followed with back-to-back kills to give the RedHawks match point. Buffalo fought it off once, but sent its next serve long to give Miami a 25-23 victory and a 3-1 win in the match.

Tomasic had nine kills for the RedHawks, while Payne and Stutz each finished with seven. Seaman led Miami with 45 assists, while McDonald finished with 25 digs. Seaman and Stutz each had four block assist for the Red and White.
