OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team lost to No. 3 Virginia 4-0 on Sunday. The RedHawks fall to 8-8 on the season and the Cavaliers improve to 14-3.

Virginia led the game in shots 30-5 and penalty corners 4-3.

"[Making adjustments at halftime] was not about tactical adjustments or X's and O's, it was about that we had to play harder," said head coach Inako Puzo. "In the first half, we lost pretty much every 50-50 ball. In the second half it was more even. We were more able to compete. We have a great goalkeeper who keeps us in the game, but we need to help her."

The Cavaliers opened the scoring early with an unassisted goal from Greta Ell. Ell earned her 10th goal of the season by dribbling through the circle before shooting left side.

The score remained 1-0 until the 26th minute of play when Mikayla Gallen put in a rebound for her second goal of the season.

During the 29th minute of play, Nikki Freeman scored her second of the season, also on a rebound, putting Virginia up 3-0 going into halftime.

With less than 15 seconds to play in the game, Pien Dicke scored her 21st goal of the season on a high shot from the top of the circle.

Maddie Passarella made 16 saves. Five different RedHawks recorded a shot. Miami kept Virginia under their scoring average for the season, which is almost five goals per game. The RedHawks kept Tara Vittese, the leading scorer in the country, off the scoresheet.

"We picked up our communication [during the second half]," said freshman midfielder/back Morgan Sturm. "We had girls at the post at all times so it was harder for them to get the rebound and we had more momentum I think."

The RedHawks host their regular season finale next Sunday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m. in a conference matchup against Ball State.
