ABOUT TOLEDO: Miami continues its tough conference-opening slate with the Rockets entering Saturday's game carrying a 10-3 record on the season, which includes a 1-1 start in MAC play. Toledo kicked off conference action against Ball State on Dec. 31, a defensive struggle that saw the Rockets fall to the Cardinals, 51-45. The team rebounded to win its first conference road contest of the season with a 66-49 victory over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 4. Overall, UT has won six of its last eight games. Like the first two teams Miami has seen in conference action, the Rockets boast a balanced scoring attack that is led by guards Jay-Ann Bravo-Harriot (13.3 ppg) and Mikaela Boyd (10.8 ppg). As a team, UT puts up 73.9 points per game. On the defensive side, the Rockets allow just 58.2 points per contest, ranking them first in the MAC in scoring margin (all games).
SERIES WITH THE ROCKETS: Miami and Toledo have met one another 62 times prior with the Rockets owning the all-time series lead, 37-25. The most recent contest between the two programs was on Jan. 16, 2016, in Oxford, a low-scoring affair that saw UT come out on top, 55-50. The Rockets have come out victourious in the last 10 meetings with Miami's last win coming on Mar. 14, 2008, in the second round of the MAC Tournament in Cleveland. The RedHawks went on to become MAC Tournament Champions and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament that year.
UP NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: Following Saturday's contest, Miami will make its way home to get ready to host Eastern Michigan on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Red & White close out next week by remaining in Oxford to faceoff with Buffalo on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN3. Saturday's game will be part one of a doubleheader that will see the Miami men's basketball team battle Akron at 7 p.m. In-between the games, fans can enjoy Carnival on the Concourse, which will feature several fun activities.
DICKERSON LEADING THE WAY: She may only be 5-3, but freshman point guard Lauren Dickerson is leading Miami in nearly every major statistical category. She is the RedHawks' leader in scoring (14.1ppg), assists (3.4 apg), minutes played (29.2 mpg) and steals (1.7 spg). The Indianapolis, Ind., native has scored in doubles figures in nine of her last 11 games, and 11 of 15 contests overall. She also boasts four outings with 20 or more points, including a career-high 30 points at Wright State on Dec. 21. Her 30-point performance marked the program's first since Courtney Osborn dropped 39 points on Ohio in March of 2013. Despite her overall early season successes, Dickerson has had a tough go of it in MAC play so far. Through two games, she is averaging just 3.5 points per game on 3-of-21 shooting. She was held scoreless for the first time in her career in the team's last game against Western Michigan.
LOOKING FOR SECONDARY SCORING: One thing the RedHawks have been lacking thus far this season is a regular contributor to provide some secondary scoring. Lauren Dickerson's 14.1 ppg leads the team and she is followed by Kayla Brown (6.9 ppg), Leah Purvis (6.8 ppg) and Jazz Smith (5.4 ppg). Miami may well be on its way to receiving that support with Purvis and Brown spearheading the offensive effort in MAC play thus far. Purvis is averaging 10.0 ppg while Brown sits at 8.5 ppg through two games. Coupled with Dickerson getting used to the style of MAC play, the RedHawks could be seeing an offensive boost soon.
