OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University volleyball team kept is incredible play up with yet another 3-0 (25-16. 25-16, 25-14) victory, this time over Kent State on Friday. It was the Red and White's 11th straight win. Miami improves to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes fall to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the MAC.
"Kent is a good team that is full of potential," said head coach Carolyn Condit. "It was probably our best team performance in the MAC and probably tied with one or two others that we had pre-MAC."
The RedHawks held the Golden Flashes to a .114 attack percentage as they were unable to score more than 16 points in any set. Miami outblocked KSU, 9-3.
Offensively, the `Hawks had a season-best .330 attack percentage, making only eight hitting errors in the entire match. Junior right side hitter Katie Tomasic led the way with 11 kills and five block assists, attack at .381 for the contest.
A solo block from senior middle hitter Paige Hill and back-to-back kills from sophomore outside hitter Stela Kukoc and senior outside hitter Maris Below gave Miami a 3-0 lead in set one and set the tone for the match. Kent State was able to keep it close for awhile, eventually pulling to within one at 12-13. Two kills from junior middle hitter Meredith Stutz, along with a block by Hill and Tomasic got the `Hawks offense rolling again. In front 16-14, Miami scored six in a row. After two straight points by the Flashes, they made three errors in a row to allow the RedHawks to take a 25-16 win.
Tomasic had three kills, while junior right side hitter Olivia Rusek had two to help Miami to a 9-7 advantage to begin set two. After Kent State tied the score at nine, two more kills from Tomasic and a KSU attack error put the RedHawks back in front. The Golden Flashes scored three in a row to tie the score at 13, but Miami came right back with six in a row of its own to put the score out of reach. Leading 22-16, a kill by Stutz off an assist from senior setter Krista Brakauskas, a block by Tomasic and Stutz and a Kent State attack error finished off a 25-16 victory.
The Golden Flashes took 3-1 and 5-4 leads early in set three, the first and only times they were in front in a set at any point on Friday. A kill from Kukoc retied the score. With Miami in front 7-6, Stutz put down a kill and teamed up with Tomasic on a block. Tomasic then put down four kills in a row, while Rusek finished with a service ace to complete a 7-0 run and make it 14-6. In front 16-9, a block from Tomasic and sophomore middle hitter Courtney Simons, along with a kill from Simons off an assist from sophomore setter Mackenzie Zielinski assured that Kent State was not going to be able to make a comeback. Miami led by as many as 12 points at 23-11 before cruising to a 25-14 victory that finished off the 3-0 win.
Kukoc finished with eight kills and nine digs, while Rusek had seven kills. Zielinski led Miami with 15 assists, while junior libero Maeve McDonald had 11 digs. Hill tied Tomasic for the team lead with five blocks (two solo and three assisted).
The RedHawks hit the road for the next two weeks as they will be the visitors in their next four MAC matches. It begins next Friday at 6 p.m. when Miami takes on Buffalo.
