BUIES CREEK, N.C. - A tough day at the plate and a few defensive miscues spelled trouble for Miami as they fell to Campbell in their season opener, 7-0, Friday.

Both teams started slow offensively, going down in order in their first trips to the plate, but it was Campbell who broke through first in the bottom half of the second inning. An RBI single through the left side and a sac fly gave the Fighting Camels a 2-0 lead through two frames.

Neither team created much noise at the plate over the next several innings. It was not until the seventh frame that the game saw another run cross home plate. In the home half of the seventh, Campbell was opportunistic in capitalizing on a couple RedHawk errors, striking five times to take a 7-0 lead.

That was all the scoring the contest had to offer as Miami dropped their opener. Junior Brad Schwartz (L, 0-1) was able to give the Red & White a good start Friday, going 5.2 innings and giving up just three hits and two earned runs. He also struck out five.

Out of the bullpen, freshman Michael Hendricks made his first collegiate appearance, tossing a third of an inning in relief. Also making their Miami debuts today were Hayden Senger, Tyler Harris and Ross Haffey. Senger collected Miami's lone hit while Haffey arguably had the RedHawks' best at-bat of the day, fouling off several pitches after working a 3-2 count. Harris made first start as a RedHawk after transferring from Missouri State.

Miami gets back on the diamond Saturday at 3 p.m for game two against Campbell.
