BUIES CREEK, N.C. - A better day at the plate was not enough as the RedHawks came up just short against Campbell, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
The contest saw a quicker start for both teams offensively compared to Friday. Campbell drew first blood in the bottom half of the opening inning of play, scoring on a two-out double that hugged the left field line. The Fighting Camels held a 2-0 lead through one.
The RedHawks answered quickly in the top half of the second. Brooks Urich led off the inning with a single through the left side. After a wild pitch and passed ball, Urich was able to get to third. Then, a Hayden Senger liner went right at the third baseman, who mishandled it, allowing Urich to score. The Red & White trailed by one until CU regained their two-run lead after a double down the left field line. The score stood at 3-1 Fighting Camels through three innings of play.
Once again, Miami answered quickly as Ross Haffey doubled off of the left field wall and, two batters later, Gary Russo turned on a pitch and earned his first home run of the season as the ball sailed over the left field wall. The two teams were locked at three apiece through three and a half. The stalemate was short-lived however as Campbell plated two in the bottom half of the inning on an error and a single through the left side, eventually holding on to win, 5-3.
Miami starter Gus Graham (L, 0-1) went four and a third innings, striking out four while surrendering five runs, three of which were earned. In relief, freshman Andy Almquist made his collegiate debut by tossing two and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball. Also appearing in relief was Ryan Marske, who collected one inning on the hill while striking out two.
Miami retakes the field on Sunday for the series finale against Campbell. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Freshman lefty Zach Spears is slated to take the mound for the Red & White.
