DENVER - Ryan Larkin made 49 saves and the Miami hockey team scored late to tie No. 1 Denver for the second-straight game, 2-2, on Saturday night.

The Pioneers (7-2-3, 3-0-3-2 National Collegiate Hockey) took two of the three points by prevailing in the shootout, while the RedHawks moved to 3-6-4 overall and 0-4-2-0 in NCHC play.

"I thought we get better as the game progressed tonight," head coach Enrico Blasi said. "We fought hard and got better this weekend."

An early hit was reviewed by the officials and resulted in a five-minute major penalty against Miami just 51 seconds in. The Pioneers got one goal on their extended power play when Dylan Gambrell picked a corner on a shot above the left circle at the 3:02 mark to grab a 1-0 lead. The Red and White got a couple power plays in the opening frame, but the early DU man advantages set a bit of a tone as the Pioneers held a 22-3 edge in shots. Larkin was immensely sharp in that sequence, stopped 21 shots to keep Miami within a goal down 1-0 after the first.

Miami came out with a bit of a push to start the second period, getting more established in the offensive zone. An offensive zone faceoff win led to the RedHawks tying things up 3:28 into the middle stanza as Justin Greenberg won the puck back to Grant Hutton for a point shot that Tanner Jaillet stopped, but Willie Knierim banged home the rebound from below the right circle for his first collegiate point to even things at 1-1.

While the RedHawks more than doubled their shots from the first period with eight, the Pioneers got things going as the period wore on and fired 14 of their own. With under six minutes to go in the frame, Troy Terry forced a turnover in the MU zone and scored on a spin around shot from the slot to put DU on top 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.

The RedHawks continued weathering the Pioneer storm in the third period with Larkin making several quality saves to keep them from building on their lead. Miami was trading blows with Denver and had some extended shifts of its own. One excellent chance came with under 10 minutes left in regulation when Scott Dornbrock got to step into a one-timer from the right circle, but Jaillet got his left pad down to kick the blast away.

With time winding down, Colin Sullivan managed to hold the puck in the zone at the blue line before dishing off the Kiefer Sherwood at the left wing. The sophomore flung the puck off Anthony Louis' stick, which created a loose puck atop the crease where Ryan Siroky pounced on it and fired it home to tie the score with 4:09 left. Officials took another look at the scoring tally to determine if the play was offside or not, but ultimately confirmed the call on the ice.

Both teams created some flurries down the stretch, but ultimately the contest wore on into overtime. During the extra session, Miami was put shorthanded after a tripping penalty with 3:05 left, but managed to kill off the penalty thanks to some more strong stops by Larkin. The Red and White got a power play of their own with 56 seconds left, but despite some late shots they were unable to cash in as the teams skated to a tie for the second-straight night.

Miami dominated possession in the 3-on-3 overtime in part due to a carry over power play, but Jaillet was locked in for Denver to keep the game going into a shootout, again for the second-straight night. Both goalies stood out in the shootout as both sides went three shooters without scoring until Gambrell converted in round four with Jaillet adding one more stop to get the extra point.

Denver ended up holding a 51-26 advantage in shots for the night with Larkin making a season-high 49 saves while Jaillet turned away 24 shots. The Pioneers went 1-for-6 on the power play while the RedHawks finished 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

Miami is idle until Dec. 2 when it opens up a road series at Cornell.
