OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team got back on the winning track as it cruised to a 6-1 victory over Appalachian State on Friday. The RedHawks improve to 9-7 overall, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-12.

"It was a great win after two losses last weekend," said head coach Inako Puzo. "It was very important for us to come strong today. I think the team played real well and kept it up tempo the entire game. We had the opportunity to roll a lot of people on the field which is big with our MAC game against Ball State coming up on Sunday.".

Miami dominated possession throughout, holding a 21-6 advantage in shots attempted. The RedHawks were rewarded for their aggressiveness, recording an 8-1 lead in penalty corners..

It was off a penalty corner that MU struck first in the 12th minute. Sophomore midfielder Estel Roig sent the pass directly to freshman midfielder Marie-Claire Gorner. She took a hard shot from the top of the circle that found the back of the net for her first career goal..

In the 17th minute, junior forward Henni Otten got the ball loose at the top of the circle and put it in to make it 2-0. The Red and White sent the game into halftime with a 3-0 lead after senior back Kelsi White found junior forward Emily George for another penalty corner goal in the 26th minute..

Appalachian State got on the board early in the second half after a turnover led to a goal. In the 50th minute, the RedHawks were awarded a penalty stroke. Sophomore midfielder Paula Portugal took it and buried it for her 13th goal of the season to make it 4-1..

Less than two minutes later, Miami drove the ball back into the Mountaineers' circle. The App State goalkeeper was able to tip the ball away from senior forward Geagy Pritchard, but it went right to Roig's stick. She put it in the empty net to increase the `Hawks advantage to 5-1..

Miami completed its scoring in the 61st minute when sophomore midfielder Ashley Laskowitz found freshman back Kirsten McNeil in the middle of the circle for McNeil's third goal of the season..

Portugal led the RedHawks with five shots, while junior back Mariona Heras and McNeil each had four. Senior goalkeeper Alysa Xavier made two saves in net..

Miami hits the road Sunday when it travels to Ball State for an important Mid-American Conference game beginning at 3 p.m.
