Hockey
Last Week: The RedHawks finished off their five-game home stand in dramatic fashion against old CCHA rival Bowling Green on Saturday. After falling behind 1-0 in the first period, Miami got a second period tally from Alex Gacek to tie the score at 1-1 after 40 minutes of play. With time winding down, Anthony Louis blasted a one-timer through traffic and in with two seconds remaining to give the Red and White a 2-1 victory to snap their two-game winless streak (Recap). This Week: Miami heads resumes NCHC play when it heads out to Omaha for a Friday-Saturday series.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: Senior guard Geovonie McKnight scored his 1,000th career point and 200th career assist, but the RedHawks were unable to complete the comeback in a 76-68 loss at Kent State on Tuesday. (Recap) Senior guard Eric Washington poured in a career-high 26 points, his fourth-straight 20-point scoring effort, but Miami was edged on a last-second shot in a heart-breaking 48-46 loss at Ball State on Saturday. (Recap) This Week: Miami returns home to host Buffalo at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19. McKnight will be honored prior to the game for scoring his 1,000th career point. Miami then hits the road for a game at Akron at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23.
Men's Swimming
Last Week: Miami welcomed in the New Year with two meets this week. On Wednesday, Miami faced Cincinnati in the Nixon Aquatic Center. Miami dropped the meet, 151-147 (Recap). The RedHawks traveled to Buffalo, N.Y. to compete against the University at Buffalo for their first MAC meet of the season. Miami lost the meet, 230.5-76.5, moving their conference record to 0-1 for the season (Recap). Looking Ahead: The RedHawks return to Oxford for their next competition when they face Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 6 in the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Women's Swimming
Last Week: The RedHawk women defeated Cincinnati 178-118 to move to 4-3 in dual meets to kick off 2016. Senior Sara Krueger and junior Stephanie LeMire both won two individual races while junior Pei Lin emerged victorious in both the three- and one-meter dive (Recap). This Week: Miami will travel to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons in an MAC battle. The RedHawks get the opportunity to race at Bowling Green before the MAC Championships will take place there in late February.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: The collegiate and junior teams returned to the ice at Synchro Illinois. The collegiate team posted their ninth-straight win dating back to the 2013-14 season, while the junior team finished second in both the short program and free skate events. (Recap) This Week: The senior team is back in action as the RedHawks travel to Salzburg, Austria for the Mozart Cup.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: Miami was selected to win both the regular season and tournament championships in a preseason poll of MAC coaches. The RedHawks then completed their exhibition season at the Nishan Vartabedian Spring Invitational at the University of Pittsburgh. Miami finished the weekend with nine singles victories against Akron, Pitt and Marshall. Freshman Emily Struble had a terrific weekend, winning all three of her matches and finishing the preseason with a team-high 11 victories. Sophomore Nelli Ponomareva also grabbed two wins against Akron and Marshall, as well as a doubles victory with partner Nastia Vasyukhina. (Recaps: Friday - Saturday - Sunday) This Week: The RedHawks begin the regular season with a matchup against the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Bloomington, Ind.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: Miami (7-9 overall, 1-4 MAC) dropped a pair of competitive games in MAC play this week. In another defensive struggle that went down to the final minute, the RedHawks came up just short in a 55-50 defeat against Toledo Wednesday evening. (Recap) Miami battled back from an early deficit to close to within two points in the fourth quarter, but Western Michigan hit its shots down the stretch to close an 80-66 victory on Saturday. (Recap) This Week: A pair of home games await Miami this week. On Wednesday, the RedHawks host Central Michigan for a 7 p.m. tip. That will be another Dollar Days contest with admission only $1 and select concessions only $2. Miami will then host Buffalo for Alumni Day on Saturday at 2 p.m. Both games will air live on ESPN3.
