BOSTON – Austin Czarnik (Washington, Mich./Green Bay (USHL)) earned one more honor to cap off his prolific career for the Miami hockey team on Friday afternoon.
The departing RedHawks’ senior forward and two-year captain was named a Second-Team West All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association, becoming the first Miami player to earn All-American honors three times in his career. The teams were announced at the Frozen Four in Boston.
Czarnik led the Red and White in scoring for the third-straight season, finishing his collegiate career with 45 points on nine goals and 36 assists this past season. His assist total ranked third among all NCAA skaters while his point total tied for the lead in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. The senior center earned a spot on the All-NCHC Second Team and he was also placed on the NCHC All-Tournament Team after guiding MU to a Frozen Faceoff title. He recorded at least one point in 29 games and finished the year with a team-high 10 multi-point outings. Czarnik is one of four NCHC players to earn All-American status, joining first-team pick Joey LaLeggia (Denver) and second-team selections Zane McIntyre (North Dakota) and Trevor Moore (Denver).
With the spot on this year’s squad, Czarnik is the third player since 2000 to be placed on three separate AHCA All-American teams. He joins Jack Connolly (Minnesota Duluth; 2010-12) and Matt Gilroy (2007-09) with that distinction.
Czarnik’s selection keeps alive Miami’s streak of 12-straight years of boasting a first or second-team All-American, which dates back to the 2004 season. That All-American streak is the longest in the country. A total of 20 All-American honors have been bestowed on MU’s 15 All-American players in its program history.
In 159 games at Miami, Czarnik notched 169 points (tied for fifth in program history) on 46 goals and 123 assists (second). He notched 40 or more points in each of his final three seasons with the RedHawks.
