Akron scored three in a row to pull within nine at 11-20, but two kills from senior middle hitter Jenny Ingle, a kill by Rusek and a service ace from sophomore libero Maeve McDonald finished off a 25-13 win.
Hill and Ingle had two kills each as Miami quickly jumped to an 11-4 lead to begin set two and force an Akron timeout. Out of the break, the Zips answered with a 5-1 run to close to within three at 9-12. Rusek and Hill took over from there, putting down kills as part of an 8-3 run that made it 20-12. In front 20-14, kills from Reiswig, Rusek and freshman middle hitter Courtney Simons gave the RedHawks a nine point cushion. Akron recorded the next point, but a kill and a solo block by Simons finished off a 25-15 victory.
A service ace from junior setter Krista Brakauskas and two kills from sophomore middle/right side hitter Meredith Stutz helped Miami to a 12-4 lead to begin set three.
