LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Miami incoming freshman Sean Kuraly is making a name for himself on the national stage before even playing a game for the RedHawks. Since Aug. 4, he has been at the U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp, where he is fighting to earn a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team, which will compete at the World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia from Dec. 26, 2012 to Jan. 5, 2013.
Kuraly made the final roster of 34 for the Junior Evaluation Camp, which was announced Aug. 7, while 11 players were sent home. The final roster for the U.S. Junior National Team won't be announced until Dec. 23 after the group reconvenes for a pre-tournament camp Dec. 19-23 in Finland. Miami sophomore Austin Czarnik took part in the World Junior Championships last year as part of Team USA.
The evaluation camp runs through Aug. 11 and originally consisted of two different U.S. teams (blue team and white team) but since the initial cuts a unified Team USA has been playing against the junior national teams of Sweden and Finland. In just four games so far, Kuraly leads Team USA with five goals and seven points. Team USA faces Sweden Thursday and concludes camp against Finland Saturday.
Adam Kimelman of NHL.com wrote a feature on Kuraly's success at the camp Wednesday, which can be read here.
