BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Senior Shawn Marquardt threw his fourth complete game of the season Saturday, but four early runs sent Miami to a 4-2 defeat by Buffalo Saturday afternoon at Audubon Park.
Matt Honchel registered two of Miami's eight hits, while Bryce Redeker and Dan Walsh each drove in a run.
Buffalo (12-26, 5-11) tallied a pair of runs in both the second and third to opened a 4-0 lead. The Bulls used a leadoff double and walk with a pair of groundouts to plate their first run, then another double made the score 2-0 after two. Three straight doubles to start the third brought home two more runs and gave UB all it would need for its second win in as many days over the RedHawks (21-23, 6-11).
Miami closed the gap with a run in the fourth. After the first out was recorded, John Crummy singled to center field before Nate Bowles walked. Walsh stroked a 1-1 pitch into right center, putting the RedHawks on the board. They tried to continue the rally in the fifth, starting the frame with consecutive singles, but a double play curtailed the threat.
The RedHawks were able to cut further into the lead in the eighth. Ryan Brenner walked and went to second on Honchel's second hit. A passed ball move both runners up before Redeker's RBI groundout made the score 4-2. But another groundout and flyout to center stranded a runner at third.
Marquardt (5-4) struck out six, while allowing nine hits and two walks over eight innings. Buffalo starter Jeff Thompson (2-1) pitched into the eighth, scattering eight hits while walking three. Kevin Crumb worked out of the jam in the eighth before giving way to River McWilliams, who retired all three Miami batters in the ninth for his second save.
The two teams conclude their series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
