OXFORD, Ohio - Miami Baseball took a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, but a seven-run outburst by Morehead State led to a 15-2 victory over the RedHawks Sunday afternoon at McKie Field. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the RedHawks, who fall to 11-8 overall.
Bryce Redeker was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in for Miami but six RedHawk pitchers surrendered season highs for runs (15) and hits (19).
Miami claimed a 2-0 lead through four innings with an RBI single by Redeker in the first and a sacrifice fly by John Crummy in the fourth. Ryan Brenner led off the game with a four-pitch walk and moved to second on a ground out by Matt Honchel. Redeker then pulled a line drive to left field to score Brenner from second.
Redeker scored the RedHawks' second run when he singled to lead off the fourth inning and later crossed the plate on Crummy's fly out to right field.
Meanwhile, on the mound lefty starter Shawn Marquardt (2-2) cruised through the first four innings, facing just two more than the minimum, but ran into trouble in the top of the fifth. The first five batters singled to score three runs and take the 3-2 lead. The next batter used a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third and give Miami its first out of the frame. Marquardt, however, put the next two runners on base, hitting one and walking the next to allow another run. After the walk, Brandon Adkins came in to relieve Marquardt, but the hits continued for the Eagles, who finished the inning with seven runs.
The pitching woes continued for Miami in the middle and late innings as Morehead State added one more in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth.
The RedHawks managed only four more base runners and were unable to score from the fifth-inning on as starter Blake Smith (2-0) and two relievers combined to keep Miami from mounting a comeback.
The RedHawks return to action on Tuesday with the start of a home-and-home series against Xavier. The teams meet in Cincinnati first before returning to Oxford on Wednesday.
