MINNEAPOLIS - After being ranked ninth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll last Monday, the Miami hockey team again came in ninth in the USCHO.com Poll, which was released Monday. The RedHawks picked up 553 points, the second-most of any of the six CCHA teams ranked.
Defending national champion Boston College is the top ranked team in the country, collecting 35 of the 50 first-place votes. Minnesota was second with 12 first-place votes while CCHA foe Michigan is third in the poll, picking up the remaining three first-place votes. North Dakota and Union rounded out the top five, respectively.
Cornell is selected sixth followed by UMass-Lowell, who edged the RedHawks in the NCAA Tournament last year, at No. 7. Denver is just 13 points ahead of the Miami for eighth in the poll with 566 points. Two CCHA teams are right behind the 'Hawks as defending Mason Cup champion Western Michigan is No. 10 with 516 points while defending CCHA regular-season champion Ferris State comes in 11th.
Minnesota-Duluth is ranked 12th with Boston University behind them. CCHA rival Notre Dame is No. 14 followed by Maine in 15th and the final CCHA team ranked, Michigan State, in 16th. Harvard sits 17th in the poll while Wisconsin, which Miami faces on the road Jan. 18-19 this season, comes in at No. 18. Air Force and Colorado College round out the 20-team poll in 19th and 20th, respectively.
Other CCHA teams receiving votes are Ohio State (54), Northern Michigan (25) and Lake Superior (12). The six CCHA teams in the poll tied for the most of any conference with the WCHA. Hockey East is represented by four teams while the ECAC has three teams ranked. Air Force is the lone Atlantic Hockey representative.
The USCHO.com Poll consists of 50 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 22 beat writers and sport professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey.
Miami, which is coming off a 24-15-2 season and its seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance, opens the 2012-13 season with an exhibition game against Western Ontario on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. before welcoming Colgate Oct. 12-13 to begin the regular season.
