Sept. 21, 2011

Final Stats

MUNCIE, Ind. - Despite an aggressive attack that featured 11 shots and 11 penalty corner attempts, the Miami University field hockey team fell, 3-0, to Ball State Wednesday in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. The RedHawks are now 2-7 overall, while the Cardinals are 1-6.

Ball State struck first in the eighth minute with a goal off a penalty corner. Miami had its opportunities during the first half as it was awarded seven penalty corners during the frame. On three of those corners, Jordan Long took a shot that beat Cardinal goalkeeper Haley Fusting, but each time a different Ball State defender was in position to make the save. All told, the Cardinals had six defensive saves on the day.

Ball State put the game away with goals in the 41st and 45th minutes. The RedHawks would respond by keeping the ball in the Cardinals' third of the field for almost the rest of the game, drawing three more penalty corners, but were just unable to put the ball into the back of the cage.

Miami outshot Ball State, 11-10, for the game with nine of those shots being on goal. Long led the RedHawks with five shots, four of which were on goal. Sarah Mueller made three saves in net for Miami, including one on a penalty stroke.

Miami returns to Oxford this weekend for big matchups against No. 11 Michigan on Saturday at 11 a.m. and MAC opponent Central Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m.
