CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Miami University volleyball team dropped an 0-3 (15-25, 13-25, 22-25) decision to host North Carolina Saturday at the Tar Heel Classic. Madison Hardy led the RedHawks defensively with 19 digs. Miami falls to 9-4 overall, while the Tar Heels improve to 7-3.
North Carolina opened up a 6-1 lead to begin the first set and force a Miami timeout. Two kills by Christina Menche, and a block by Kayleigh Cox and Meg Riley were part of a 6-2 run that pulled the RedHawks to within one at 7-8. The Tar Heels would eventually push the advantage back to three at 14-11, but a kill by Amy Raseman and a service ace by Hardy would once again make it a one-point set. North Carolina would take control from there, going on an 11-2 run to close out a 25-15 win.
A kill by Raseman stopped a 4-0 run to begin the second set by the Tar Heels, and sparked a 6-3 run that pulled Miami to within one at 6-7. The run was completed with a solo block from Jenn Caylor. North Carolina answered with a 9-1 run to take control of the set at 16-7. Menche recorded two more kills off Amy Kendall assists to make it 16-9, but the Red and White would not get any closer, as they fell, 13-25.
Set three proved to be a competitive battle. Despite kills from Raseman, Cox and Lisa Treadway, Miami fell behind, 3-6, early. Two kills and a block from Farrell would help the Red and White tie the set at seven. After dropping the next point, a kill by Caylor, a block from Riley and a kill from Treadway would give the RedHawks their first lead of the match at 10-8. An 8-3 run by the Tar Heels would put North Carolina back in front, 16-13. Miami fought back, as two kills from Caylor would help it tie it back up at 18. The teams would trade points until it was tied at 22. From there, the Tar Heels would record a block and two kills to take the set, 25-22, and win the match.
Raseman led the RedHawks with eight kills. Madison Dodd recorded a career-high 11 digs. Riley led Miami with 20 assists.
The RedHawks complete play at the Tar Heel Classic later Saturday when they take on Tulsa at 5:30 p.m.
