RedHawks Roll Past Xavier, 10-2, in Nuxhall Classic

April 13, 2011

Box Score

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Miami pounded out 18 hits, one shy of its season high, and Alex Brown earned his first career victory with six scoreless innings as the RedHawks routed Xavier 10-2 Wednesday in the consolation game of the Joe Nuxhall Classic.

Kyle Weldon and Adam Weisenburger each recorded a season-high four hits for Miami (18-18). Cory Klenke had three singles, tying his career-best.

Ryan Brenner singled to lead off the game, then stole second. After Brooks Fiala walked, Brenner moved to third on an attempted double steal. Later in the inning, Brenner put the RedHawks up 1-0 when he stole home -- the first of three Miami thefts of the plate during the game.

The RedHawks added to the lead in the third on back-to-back singles by Weisenburger and Weldon, then a sacrifice fly by Brad Gschwind. An RBI groundout by Bryce Redeker and a bases-loaded walk to Gschwind in the fourth plated two more runs, making the score 4-0.

Miami broke the game open in the fifth. Klenke doubled to leadoff the frame and was sacrificed to third. Ryan Brenner walked allowing the RedHawks to set up a steal at home. Brenner bolted for second, forcing a throw that allowed Klenke to score, before returning to first. A hit batter and wild pitch put runners on first and third, setting up a successful double steal. Weisenburger singled to center for the third run and an 8-0 lead.

The RedHawks added single runs in the seventh and ninth to reach double digits for the seventh time. Weldon delivered an RBI single before pinch-hitter Dan Walsh drove in John Crummy in the last at-bat.

Brown (1-0) scattered eight hits over six full innings of work. He walked one and struck out four. The freshman has allowed just two earned runs in 21.0 innings this season.

Xavier parlayed three hits into two runs off reliever Charles Zubrod in the ninth to break the shutout. Musketeer starter Ben Thomas (1-1) took the loss, despite registering three hits as the designated hitter. He allowing three runs in 2.1 innings.

Miami returns to action this weekend with a Mid-American Conference series against Western Michigan. The three-game set begins Friday at 6 p.m.
