RICHMOND, Ky. -- Miami jumped out to an first-inning lead and Brandon Adkins pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth, leading Miami to a 6-3 victory over Eastern Kentucky Tuesday afternoon.
The game was the opener of a home-and-home series that wraps up tomorrow with the first game of the year at Oxford's McKie Field.
Eight different RedHawks got hits, with only Jon Edgington getting a pair. Marcus Makuch had the only multiple RBI day with two.
Miami (8-11) got off to a 3-0 lead after only five batters. Ryan Kaup earned a leadoff walk and went to second on a single by Nate Bowles. One out later, Kyle Weldon doubled to open the scoring. Makuch followed with a two-run single to right field.
A solo home run by Eastern Kentucky's Ryan Faidley in the second made the score 3-1, then the teams played four innings of scoreless baseball until a late flurry.
The RedHawks added two runs in seventh to make the score 5-1. Brad Gschwind singled to lead off the frame, then Jon Edgington executed a perfect hit-and-run to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, Bowles was hit by a pitch to load the bases, allowing Redeker to earn a RBI on a fly to center. A fielding error on a ground ball to second let Edgington cross the plate.
The Colonels (6-14) countered with a solo home run by Michael Garcia, but Kevin Bower hit his first of the year in the eighth to push the lead back to four, 6-2.
A pair of doubles in the eighth led to an EKU run, making the score 6-3, then the Colonels managed a serious challenge in the ninth. They loaded the bases with one out off closer Sam Dawes, forcing the RedHawks back to the bullpen.
Brandon Adkins induced an infield foul out, then struck out Jacob Daniel to end the game and collect his second save.
Shawn Marquardt (1-3) earned the win, pitching into the seventh inning. He lasted 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, before giving way to Matt Rosinski. Marquardt struck out four and walked just one.
Eastern Kentucky used nine pitchers for one inning each, sending starter Matt Harris (0-1) to his first loss of the season.
The two teams meet again tomorrow at 6 p.m. at McKie Field.
