DELAND, Fla. - A tough second-half shooting performance and some costly turnovers late did in the Miami University women's basketball team, 71-62, Friday afternoon at Stetson. Courtney Osborn led the RedHawks with 21 points. Miami is now 3-2 overall, while the Hatters improve to 5-1.
The RedHawks came out on fire during the first half, shooting 45.5 percent (15-for-33) during the frame. Unfortunately it did not continue during the second half, as Miami was only able to shoot 30.8 percent (8-for-26), including 1-for-6 from the three-point line.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Osborn and Maggie Boyer gave the RedHawks a 6-3 lead early. Osborn continued to hit shots, as a jumper and a three-pointer gave Miami a 15-10 advantage with 12:24 remaining in the half. A 9-3 run by Stetson gave it its first lead of the game at 19-18. Two straight jumpers by Kelsey Simon would give the lead right back to the Red and White at 22-19 with eight minutes remaining.
Miami would eventually expand the lead to as many as 10 points at 37-27 off a layup from Courtney Larson at the 2:22 mark. The Hatters would score the next five points, but Erica Almady hit a free throw to send the RedHawks into the break in front, 38-32.
Kirsten Olowinski opened the second half with a layup to put Miami up eight. A 12-4 run by Stetson would make it 45-44 Miami with 12:17 to go. A layup by Osborn ended the run, but the Hatters hit a three-pointer to tie the score. With the score tied at 49, Miami's shot went cold as Stetson went on a 14-5 run to blow the game open. Rachael Hencke would hit a jumper late to pull the RedHawks within seven, but the Hatters hit their free throws down the stretch to earn the 71-62 victory.
In addition to Osborn's 21 points, she recorded five assists and five rebounds. Almady finished with eight points and seven rebounds, while Olowinski had six points and six rebounds. Miami outrebounded Stetson, 44-34, but was done in by 24 turnovers, 16 of which were in the second half.
Miami returns to action next Friday when it hosts Iona for a 1:30 p.m. contest. That is the RedHawks annual "Class at the Court" game, and will see over 1,500 elementary students from the Talawanda School District in attendance.
