OXFORD, Ohio - Four RedHawk players finished in double figures as the women's basketball team earned a hard-fought, 77-72, victory over Indiana Tuesday night. The win was head coach Maria Fantanarosa's 200th at Miami. The RedHawks improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Hoosiers fall to 2-2.
Two of Miami's Indiana guards led the way in the victory over their home state team. Courtney Osborn, from Fishers, Ind., and Maggie Boyer, from Lebanon, Ind., each had 19 points.
The Hoosiers came out on fire, starting the game 7-for-9 as they jumped to a 15-7 lead at the 14:31 mark. A jumper from Hannah Robertson and a layup from Osborn stopped the run, as the RedHawks would hold Indiana without a basket for the next six and half minutes. Two free throws would tie the game at 15, and a jumper by Boyer would give Miami the lead at 17-16, before the Hoosiers ended their scoring drought with a bucket to make it 18-17 with 7:58 to go.
Trailing 26-25, Boyer hit a jumper to give Miami the lead. She would then find Osborn on the next possession with a pass inside for a layup that made it 29-26. Indiana hit a free throw with 34 seconds remaining to send the RedHawks into the break in front, 29-27.
Osborn led the RedHawks with nine points during the first half. Miami outrebounded Indiana by a 20-12 margin during the period.
The Hoosiers scored the first four points of the second half to take a one-point lead. Lillian Pitts would answer with a layup to give the advantage right back to the RedHawks. They would not relinquish it again for the rest of the game. Boyer scored the next seven points as Miami increased its lead to six at 38-32. A 7-4 run by Indiana would pull it to within three, but Erica Almady answered that with a jumper that made it 44-39 with 14:53 to go.
Indiana would eventually cut the lead down to two at 53-51 with 8:29 remaining, but Rachael Hencke hit the first of several big shots to assure they would get no closer. A jumper and a three-point basket by Hencke would give the RedHawks a 62-54 lead at the 5:33 mark. They expanded the advantage to 10 at 68-58 as Osborn and Almady each converted their free throws after getting fouled. The Hoosiers were able to hit some outside shots at the end to pull a little closer, but Miami hit the rest of its free throws down the stretch to secure Coach Fantanarosa's 200th win, 77-72.
In addition to Osborn and Boyer's 19 points, Hencke finished with 13 points, while Robertson had 11. Almady was the team's leading rebounder with 10 to go with scoring eight points. Pitts also had a strong game guarding a very tall Hoosier team, finishing with five points and seven rebounds.
The RedHawks head south to Florida for the holiday as they will take on Stetson on Friday at 1 p.m. The game will be heard live on the Miami Sports Network Internet Channel.
