OXFORD, Ohio - In a back-and-forth affair, No. 18 Lake Superior State scored the game-winning goal on the power play just 42 seconds into overtime to secure a 3-2 win over the No. 16 Miami hockey team Thursday night at Steve Cady Arena. Despite outshooting the Lakers (6-1-0, 4-1-0 CCHA) 31 to 23, the RedHawks (2-5-0, 0-3-0 CCHA) failed to capitalize on numerous scoring chances, including five power plays, while LSSU was 2-for-6 with a man advantage.
Miami stormed out of the gate in the first period, generating quality scoring chances including a goal from senior defenseman Cameron Schilling just over five minutes into the opening stanza, his first tally of the year. Freshman Alex Wideman intercepted a pass at the Miami blue line and fed senior co-captain Alden Hirschfeld, who charged toward net on a 2-on-1 with classmate Patrick Tiesling. While Hirschfeld was unable to capitalize on the initial shot, Schilling swooped in for the rebound and flipped the puck by Lake Superior State goaltender Kevin Kapalka on the backhand, giving the `Hawks a 1-0 advantage.
Lake Superior would battle back late in the period when Nick McParland capitalized on a rebound in front of the RedHawks' net. With a Laker power play expiring, Matt Bruneteau fired a slap shot from the point that senior goalie Cody Reichard stopped but McParland, who was laying on the ice, was able to slide the second chance behind Reichard.
In the second period, the RedHawks regained the lead on a goal just seconds after a power play expired, courtesy of sophomore Bryon Paulazzo's wrist shot from the left circle, his first goal of the season. Paulazzo received a perfect pass from freshman Tyler Biggs from behind the net before wristing the puck in high, near side. Schilling also assisted on the goal, giving him his second point of the night and the ninth multi-point game of his career.
The Lakers would not go quietly however, as McParland found the net again when he one-timed a puck past Reichard on a Laker power play at the 10:50 mark of the second period, tying the game at 2-2. Kyle Haines set up the score with a feed from Reichard's right.
Miami outshot Lake Superior, 11-8, in the third period, but did not take advantage of three power plays over the final 20 minutes of regulation. With just 13 ticks left in the third period, junior Steven Spinell was whistled for charging giving LSSU a one-man advantage. Regulation ended even at 2-2, but the power play carried over into overtime and just 42 seconds into the extra session, Zach Trotman slotted home a rebound five-hole after McParland's original shot was saved, giving the Lakers the 3-2 win.
Kapalka finished with 29 saves to give Lake Superior its first win over Miami since March 10, 2007 in the CCHA Playoffs as the RedHawks were 9-0-1 against LSSU in the last 10 meetings. Reichard stopped 20 saves in defeat, Miami's fourth straight loss, two of which have now come in overtime.
The RedHawks look for a series split Friday night when the two teams meet up again at 7:35 p.m. at Steve Cady Arena.
