Miami Hockey Postgame Notes
Senior co-captain Alden Hirschfeld tallied his first goal of the season, a short-handed goal at 11:49 of the second period. It was Miami's first short-handed marker since Oct. 8, 2011 when classmate Matt Tomassoni tallied one in the third period against Bemidji State. But that was not the only short-handed goal of the night for the RedHawks, as freshman Tyler Biggs capitalized on a Lake Superior turnover at 15:42 of the second period. The last time Miami scored two short-handed goals was on Jan. 14, 2011 when Reilly Smith scored one in the first and Hirschfeld added another in the second period on Jan. 14, 2011 against Bowling Green.
Freshman Tyler Biggs scored his first goal as a RedHawk at 15:42 of the second period. It was a short-handed goal and his second consecutive game with a point as he notched an assist in Thursday's game, marking the first time he has registered a point in consecutive games. Blake Coleman also tallied his first career goal as a RedHawk at 13:48 of the third period.
Miami was swept in a home series for the first time since Mar. 9-10, 2007 when Lake Superior State did it in the second round of the CCHA Tournament. It was also the last time LSSU swept Miami as the RedHawks had been 9-0-1 against the Lakers since they had last swept Miami.
Miami was swept in back-to-back series for the first time since the 2004-05 season, when Miami was swept by Ohio State, St. Lawrence (non-conference), and Michigan consecutively.
This is the first regular season home sweep of Miami since the 2001-02 season when Michigan State did it February 22-23.
The RedHawks are in the midst of their first five-game losing streak since the 2008-09 season. The streak spanned from Jan. 2-16, but the RedHawks did go on to play in the National Championship that year.
Miami has six losses in its first eight games for the first time since 1995-96 when Miami started 1-9.
The last time the RedHawks started a season with at least a 0-4 record in league play was 1995-96 when Miami started 0-6 in the CCHA.
Junior Steven Spinell has had great success over his career against LSSU as he tied his career high for points and assists with two helpers in Friday night's game. He originally set his career-high Feb. 6, 2010 also against the Lakers. Lake Superior State was also the last team he scored a goal against (10/29/10) and registered an assist against (2/26/11).
Miami played its first game without giving up a power play goal since Oct. 7 against Bemidji State in the season-opener, killing all four LSSU power plays Friday.
The RedHawks are now 0 for their last 21 and 0-for-20 in the last 5 games on the power play.
Miami tied its season-high for shots both nights of the LSSU series with 31.
