OXFORD, Ohio - It was a defensive-minded game with a goal late in the first half proving to be the difference as Ohio defeated the Miami University field hockey team, 1-0, on Saturday. The RedHawks fall to 5-13 overall and 3-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats improve to 14-3 overall and 7-0 in the MAC.
The RedHawks best chance to score came in the first seven minutes of the game when they created some sustained pressure. Emily Gruesser and Amanda Seeley each had shots that were kicked aside by Ohio's goalkeeper Jen McGill. The game remained scoreless until the Bobcats were awarded a penalty corner in the 24th minute. After Taylor Brown's initial shot was saved by Sarah Mueller, the ball went back to Brown. She took another shot that was tipped in by Jessica Jue for the game's only goal.
The second half was played mostly in the midfield, as each team was able to record three shot attempts during the frame. Miami got an opportunity to play a man up when Brown received a yellow card with six minute to go, but it was unable to get a shot off.
For the game, Ohio outshot the RedHawks, 11-8. The Bobcats also had a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. Seeley led Miami with three shots, while Mueller made four saves in net.
The RedHawks complete their home schedule Sunday when they host Kent State at 1 p.m. After the game, they will hold their annual Senior Day ceremony where Seeley, Brittany Branco, Kylie Landeros and Jackie Nguyen will be honored.
