Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University field hockey team fell, 2-1, to No. 18 Ohio State Tuesday in a competitive match at the Miami Field Hockey Complex. The RedHawks are now 5-12 overall, while the Buckeyes improve to 9-7.
The game was scoreless for the majority of the first half. Miami's best chance to score came in the 16th minute when Emily Gruesser had a shot off a penalty corner that was kicked away by the Ohio State goalkeeper. Sarah Mueller came up big in the 29th minute for the RedHawks making two saves on four OSU shot attempts off a single penalty corner.
It appeared the game would go into halftime scoreless, but a late pass by Berta Queralt found Susan Dappen to the right of the goal. Her tap in with only two seconds remaining sent the Buckeyes into the break leading, 1-0.
Miami withstood an early Ohio State attack to keep within one goal during the beginning of the second half. Awarded a penalty corner in the 52nd minute, Amanda Seeley's initial shot was kicked away by the goalkeeper. The ball came right back to Seeley, who took a second shot that found that back of the net and tied the score at one.
The tie was short lived, however. Less than a minute later, the Buckeyes earned another penalty corner. Danica Deckard to a one-time pass from Queralt to beat Mueller and give Ohio State a 2-1 lead. That lead would hold, as the RedHawks were unable to generate the tying goal.
The Buckeyes outshot Miami, 15-5 for the contest. They also had a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners. Seeley and Gruesser each had two shots, while Mueller made six saves in net.
The RedHawks will host their final two home games this weekend. On Saturday they welcome Ohio for a 1 p.m. contest. They will then take on Kent State Sunday, also at 1 p.m. That game will be Senior Day and at the conclusion of the match, Seeley, Brittany Branco, Kylie Landeros and Jackie Nguyen will be honored in a postgame ceremony.
